Nels continued working as a technician in Stephan Zweifel’s lab after graduating from Carleton College in 1995.
During his time at the lab, he was conducting genetic research on yeast and a fungus found in leaf-cutting ants. He was a student in Aaron Turkewitz’s lab at the University of Chicago while also pursuing a Ph.D.
He also created a program to study pathogen-driven evolution while working as a postdoc in Harmit Malik’s lab at the Fred Hutchinson Center.
He was named a Pew Scholar in the Biomedical Sciences in 2011, and he received the American Society for Virology’s Ann Palmenberg Junior Investigator Award in 2015.
He is currently an associate professor of human genetics at the University of Utah, where he studies evolutionary cell biology.
Furthermore, in 2020, he was one of twenty fellows who received The MacArthur Fellowship, which is given to scientists who are considered geniuses.
As a result, Elde will be paid a stipend of $625,000 over the course of five years.
Elde has published articles on evolutionary genetics that focus on microbes and human cell evolution while working as a professor of Human Genetics.
