In Pensacola, Florida, Mitchell attended Pine Forest High School for his first two years.

As a sophomore, he then transferred to Landry-Walker College and Career Preparatory High School in New Orleans. He didn’t play there, though.

As a first- and second-year student, Mitch did participate in basketball for Pine Forest, but he didn’t have much of an impact because he was still learning the game.

Mitchell hadn’t started playing until the eighth grade when he went from being 6 feet 2 inches to 7 feet 0 inches in height.

Before his junior year, he first played for Chalmette High School in the summer league.

In the 2017 McDonald’s All-American Boys Game, Mitchell finished with 14 points, three rebounds, and two blocks.

He also participated in the 2017 Jordan Brand Classic, where he finished with 15 points and three rebounds in 17 minutes of play.

The basketball player originally committed to Texas A&M but later switched to Western Kentucky to play under coach Rick Stansbury. As an assistant coach for the Aggies, Stansbury had hired Mitchell.

Career after College

In July 2017, Mitchell enrolled at Western Kentucky University for the summer semester. Before the team’s journey to Costa Rica, he trained with the team for roughly two weeks.

He had left college, and his room had been cleaned, according to sources. As a result of disobeying team regulations, he was later suspended indefinitely.

He was granted a transfer release after speaking with head coach Rick Stansbury; otherwise, he would have been forced to sit out the 2017–18 campaign.

In order to get a waiver from the NCAA, Mitchell went to Louisiana State University, the University of Kansas, and the University of New Orleans in August 2017.

The player announced on September 18 that he would forgo attending college and independently join the 2018 NBA Draft.

He would be the first draft pick who was recruited and who did not participate in any high school, college, or professional competition for a full year prior to declaring for the NBA draft.

The NBA would still identify him as a Western Kentucky product, though.

Additionally, later in the season, he was ultimately prohibited from participating in the NBA G League per G League regulations because of his brief stay at Western Kentucky.

Billy Preston and De’Anthony Melton were two additional prospects who were impacted by the choice at the time and were in comparable positions.

Professional Career

On June 21, 2018, Mitchell was selected by the New York Knicks with the 36th overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft.

In the Golden State Warriors’ defeat to 128-100 on October 26, Mitchell had his first start, with six points and six rebounds in 29 minutes of play.

Robinson developed his free throw shooting throughout the course of his two years at Chalmette and increased his range from beyond the arc, making as many as five threes in a game.

Surgery

In the fourth quarter of the game against Milwaukee in February 2021, Robinson was engaged in a post-battle with Bucks big man Brook Lopez.

He rose to attempt to block a pass intended for Lopez. Instead, he stumbled in his landing and broke down in pain.

He immediately left the game and took X-rays, where it was discovered that the right hand’s metacarpal had been fractured.

Surgery was required to correct it for the player. He underwent his first operation. The procedure was performed in New York at the Hospital for Special Surgery.

Mitch thanked everyone for their support in a video he uploaded on Instagram after the operation. The video’s caption read:
