During his college years, he performed with the Georgetown Players Improv Troupe, worked as a server in a comedy club, and began performing at DC Improv (The Improv) in Washington, D.C.

He announced a tour of his newest show, The New One, in April 2017. The tour began with 25 cities and included a limited podcast titled The Old Ones in December 2017.
The Old One podcast features him analyzing old stand-up routines with guests such as his brother Joe Birbiglia, comedians Pete Holmes and John Mulaney, film producer and director Judd Apatow, ‘This American Life’ contributor Ira Glass, and his wife.
The New One premiered off-Broadway at the Cherry Lane Theatre on July 26 and was originally scheduled to run through August 2 before being extended due to high demand for tickets to and through August 26.
He toured My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend all over the world, including stops in the United States, Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend, his second one-man show, ran for four months off-Broadway and won the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Solo Show in 2011.
Mike performed My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend on tour in the United States, Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Birbiglia gave his final performance at Carnegie Hall on June 2, 2013.
Vulture, Paste, The Laugh Button, and Laughspin named My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend the number one stand-up special of 2013.
It was also named one of Time Out New York’s 2013 Best Comedy Specials. The special was named one of the top 20 funniest stand-up specials of all time by Flavorwire.
In March 2020, he co-founded the “Tip Your Waitstaff” charity initiative with fellow comics to raise funds for comedy clubs that were closed due to COVID-19.
He is a regular contributor to the public radio program This American Life, which is distributed by Public Radio International.
