On lap 56 of the race, while Lewis Hamilton was driving, Masi allowed just the five vehicles directly before championship challenger Max Verstappen to unlap themselves before the restart.
This enabled Max to overtake Hamilton and win the World Drivers’ Championship in 2021. Later, Mercedes filed a protest against the race result, alleging that Masi breached security vehicle procedure by allowing the vehicles directly front of Verstappen to unlap themselves and no others, and that the restart should have occurred the following lap, resulting in Hamilton’s victory.
Stewards dismissed the disagreement on the grounds that the Race Director has the “abrogating authority” to adjust any conventional watching security car technique as they see fit. Mercedes has stated that they want to pursue the decision.
