Matt Gallagher is a well-known American author, former US Army captain, and Iraq War veteran. Matt Gallagher primarily writes contemporary war fiction and nonfiction. In 2010, he became well-known for his war memoir Kaboom. In addition, in February 2016, he published Youngblood, which received positive reviews and was named a finalist for the 2016 Dayton Literary Peace Prize for fiction.

Early Life and Childhood

Matt Gallagher was born on February 24, 1983, in Reno, Nevada, in the United States. Gallagher’s age is 39.

He was born to loving and supportive parents in Reno, Nevada, in the United States.

Gallagher is the son of attorneys Deborah Scott and Dennis Gallagher. He also has a younger brother, Luke, with whom he spent his childhood.

Education Details

Matt Gallagher and his brother attended Brookfield School and, later, Bishop Manogue High School. He edited the school newspaper and ran cross country and track in high school, graduating in 2001.

Gallagher studied at Wake Forest University in North Carolina before joining the Army ROTC the week before 9/11.

While at Wake Forest, he was a member of Theta Chi Fraternity and the sports editor of Old Gold & Black.

He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 2005 and was commissioned into the United States Army as a second lieutenant in the Armor Branch.

From May 2005 to June 2009, he served as a Cavalry officer and Captain in the United States Army. In the 25th Infantry Division, he was a scout platoon leader and targeting officer.

Gallagher was later assigned to the 25th Infantry Division’s 2nd Brigade at Schofield Barracks. He was promoted to the rank of captain in July 2008.

He also left the Army in 2009 after earning the Combat Action Badge during his deployment to Iraq.

He wrote the novels Empire City and Youngblood. He has also had work published in The New York Times, The Paris Review, Wired, Esquire, and ESPN.

Gallagher is the author of the Iraq war memoir Kaboom, as well as the co-editor and contributor to the short film Fire & Forget.

In 2015, Vanity Fair named him one of the voices of a new generation of American war literature.

He has also appeared on CBS News Sunday Morning and The Diane Rehm Show on NPR. Retired General David H. Petraeus also interviewed him at the 92nd Street Y in Manhattan.

He has also been a Writing Instructor at Words After War since September 2013.
