Early Career

As a senior shooting guard who broke records, Matt was well-known for playing basketball in his high school. His final high school grade point average was the second-highest in Southeast Pennsylvania history.

Additionally, Matt finished second in state history only to former Los Angeles Lakers player Kobe Bryant.

Carroll also outranked Bryant by being the first and only Pennsylvanian to win Mr. Basketball two times.

Basketball gurus across the nation chose Carroll for the United States Junior National Team twice after recognizing his talent and selecting him for the team.

Carroll was chosen and paired with experienced athletes to compete in games against the Portugal teams in 1998 and 1999, respectively.

Carroll has been selected for prep all-star competitions including the Magic Johnson Roundball Classic in addition to playing for the United States junior national team.

Carroll, who later rose to prominence on the university basketball team, attended the University of Notre Dame, where he played a key role. On the list of top scorers at Notre Dame, he came in at number six.

In addition, Carroll is second in free throw % and is Notre Dame’s second-best all-time performance in terms of made three-point field goals.

In his senior year, he was also selected for the All-Big East First Team and the Associated Press All-American Honorable Mention Teams.

Professional Career

Before beginning his professional career, Matt was already a basketball superstar. When Matt declared for the 2003 NBA draft, everyone had great expectations for him.

Carroll was sadly not picked, though. However, just because he went undrafted doesn’t always imply that his NBA career was over.

Carroll joined the New York Knicks after becoming a free agent after participating in their summer league.

He also attended the Knicks’ 2003–04 training camp and was one of the organization’s last cuts before joining the pro team.

Carroll signed a free-agent contract with the Portland Trail Blazers on November 7, 2003, and played in 13 of their games.

Carroll joined the NBA Development League team Roanoke Dazzle after a year. Later, he became a Spur.

On December 11, Carroll re-signed with the Roanoke Dazzle following a great campaign with the group that saw him win the NBADL Most Valuable Player award.

He had the most points among all NBADL scorers as well. Carroll received the NBADL Player of the Month award in January after scoring a season-high point.

Prior to his professional retirement in 2013, Carroll played for a number of clubs, including the Charlotte Bobcats, Dallas Mavericks, New Orleans Hornets, etc.

What caused Matt to leave the NBA?

After a ten-year NBA career, Matt officially announced his retirement in 2013. The shooter was dealt by the Bobcats to the Hornets, which prevented him from participating heavily in the 2012–2013 season.

His career as a whole was significantly impacted by the numerous team changes he experienced. There was a notion that Carroll lost interest in playing after being traded multiple times.

In response to this claim, Matt stated that he initially did not want to retire early but now regrets it because he has played basketball his entire life.

He further explained that he wanted to maintain a connection to basketball in whatever way possible, comparing life without it to that of a fish without water.

Carroll has so continued to serve as the Sixers’ basketball coach even after retiring from the NBA. Brett Brown was coached by him.

He currently works with the Hornets as an analyst and director of player programs.
