Basketball Professional Career

Barnes was selected 46th overall in the 2002 NBA draft by the Memphis Grizzlies.

Matt, along with Nick Anderson, was quickly transferred to the Cleveland Cavaliers in exchange for Wesley Person.

He joined the Fayetteville Patriots for the 2002–03 season after being sent to the NBA D-League by the Cavaliers.

Matt played with Dennis Rodman for the first season of the ABA’s Long Beach Jam in 2003. With a 24–7 record, the team won the ABA Championship.

In October of 2004, Matt signed with the Sacramento Kings. Midway through the 2004–05 season, he was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers.

Barnes signed as a free agent with the New York Knicks in October 2005.

On May 8, the player was also fined $50,000 for remarks he made to James Harden’s mother during a game against the Houston Rockets.

Matt was also suspended for two games by the NBA on December 28, 2015, following a violent altercation with New York Knicks coach Derek Fisher at Barnes’ estranged wife’s house in Southern California in October.

Barnes’ two-game suspension without pay was revoked after the NBA Players Association filed a grievance on his behalf on January 13, 2016.

In addition, four days later, the NBA fined him $35,000 for openly justifying his actions against Fisher during their October altercation.
