Childhood and Adolescence

On January 25, 1990, Mat Fraser was born in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.

Don Fraser and Candace Jones, both former Canadian Olympic figure skaters, are his parents.

Fraser spent his early years in Sharbot Lake, where his mother worked as a doctor and his father stayed at home.

Later, the family relocated to Colchester, Vermont, in the United States.

Fraser received most of his education in the United States.

He was athletic from a young age, learning to swim, waterski, skate, and even go up the stairs in a handstand at the age of five.

Mat became interested in weightlifting after he witnessed his instructor lifting weights to compete with a friend when he was twelve years old.

He was thereafter introduced to a weightlifting coach who taught him how to properly lift weights.

He resumed full-time Olympic weightlifting training at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs after graduation on a scholarship.

At the University of Vermont in Burlington, he pursued a double minor in math and business.

Fraser began CrossFit training at the age of twenty-two and competed in the CrossFit competition in 2013.

Crossfit Program & Career

Mat won his first national weightlifting title at the age of thirteen.

He was also the school champion in 2003, 2005, and 2007, which helped him win the junior national title.

Mat made his CrossFit Games debut in 2014, with a history in Olympic weightlifting and as a junior national champion.

Fraser discovered CrossFit while looking for a better place to train in Olympic lifts.

Crossfit workout with Mat Fraser

Despite his lack of interest in CrossFit, he used the CrossFit gym because of the many types of equipment used by the Olympic lifters in town.

Fraser originally discovered CrossFit while attending college in Vermont and exercising at a CrossFit gym (Champlain Valley CrossFit).

He was inspired to join in CrossFit events and began competing in local competitions in 2013.

Fraser could place sixth in the CrossFit North East Regionals despite only having a few months of CrossFit training. Such a performance, however, was inadequate to qualify for the CrossFit Games.

As a result, he competed in the NPGL as a member of the New York Rhinos in 2014, before joining the Built By Bergeron team in 2015.

Runner-Up

Mat won the North East Regionals in 2014 thanks to his dedication and hard work; this triumph garnered him national exposure.

He finished second to Rich Froning in his first CrossFit Games appearance. He finished seven times in the top ten at the 2014 event.

Similarly, he was tied for the first position in the Overhead second with Froning. He also took second place in Midline March and Thick ‘N’ Quick.

He received Rookie of the Year for his excellent record in just a few months.

Mat was expected to win the 2015 CrossFit Games when his opponent, Rich Froning, announced his retirement.

He began his CrossFit career with exceptional performance, but on the third day of the tournament, he had multiple negative results.

As his biggest failure and terrible defeat, he declared his loss against Ben Smith and came in second place. He remarked that the situation taught him something that he would remember for the rest of his life.

Become a Champion

Mat regularly performed well at the 2016 CrossFit Games events after reflecting on and learning from his mistakes and failures.

Despite having little interest in running, Fraser began his campaign with a win in the 7k Ranch Trail Run.

Although he only won one race, he placed second in seven others and finished in the top ten in practically all of them.

His all-around success in the events allowed him to dominate the competition and emerge as the champion.

He was able to pass Ben Smith with a 197-point lead, the largest margin of victory in the CrossFit Games’ history.

He dominated the 2017 CrossFit Games, winning four of the final eight events, much like the previous year. It was the first time he has won several events in a single Game.

Mat also successfully defended his title in the 2018 CrossFit Games.

In the third, he won two events and finished in the top four in ten of the fourteen events. He finished with a total of 1,162 points, including 220 lead points.

Fraser qualified for the 2019 CrossFit Games after winning the first-ever sanctioned event. In the CrossFit Games, though, he was up against a formidable opponent in Noah Ohlsen.

Despite opening the campaign with two wins, he faltered on day two.

Despite the obstacles and hardships he faced, he won the final event, making him the champion for the fourth time.

Diet and Exercise

Fraser only put in a few hours of exercise each week and had no food plan when he first started CrossFit.

After placing second in the 2015 CrossFit Games, he understood his flaws and changed his diet to eliminate junk foods and soda, losing ten pounds in the process.

Mat eats large meals four to five times a day when exercising, relying primarily on meat and veggies with sticky white rice.

During his workouts, he makes sure to consume supplements like whey protein, amino acids, and cannabidiol.

During the off-season, he eats only one or two meals every day, allowing him to be more flexible with his meals. Not to mention, Fraser is a coffee connoisseur, specifically espresso.

He prioritizes his sleep for recovery after training, in addition to his nutrition and training. Fraser gets at least 9 hours of sleep every night.

He follows some structure, despite the fact that he does not have a specific workout schedule. He concentrates on warming up and cooling down before and after his workout.

He trains at least two times a day, four times a week during a CrossFit season.

Three track sessions, three or four weightlifting sessions, a couple of swimming sessions, and one on-road bike session are all part of his training.

The following day’s training is linked to the prior one; for example, a conditioning day may be followed by strength exercises the following day.

He also concentrates on his flaws in order to improve.

Mat mostly prepares for the tournament over a 12- to 16-week period; however, as the competition approaches, he reduces his training significantly while avoiding excessive sessions that could have a negative impact.

Love Life

Mat Fraser has been in a long-term relationship with Sammy Moniz and lives with her. The couple is not married, but they are in a relationship.

“Feeding The Frasers,” a website developed by Sammy Moniz, is dedicated to the food she prepares for Fraser, a CrossFit athlete.

The pair lives in Cookeville, Tennessee, and their social media accounts show that they are deeply in love.
