She began writing children’s fantasies to stay in touch with her young niece and nephew. Her first submission was in 2005, and her first professional sale was in 2006 to Strange Horizons.
She has also worked with the Center for Puppetry Arts, Jim Henson Productions, and her own production company.
In Iceland, she worked for two seasons on the children’s television show LazyTown. Kowal worked as an art director for Shimmer Magazine and later for Weird Tales.
She served as the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America’s secretary for two years before becoming president in 2010 and 2019. She also won the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer in 2008.
She has won both the Nebula and the Hugo awards.
Lady Astronaut of Mars was awarded the Hugo Award for Best Short Story in 2011, the Hugo Award for Best Related Work in 2013, and the Hugo Award for Best Novelette in 2014.
She has also appeared as a guest star on the podcast Writing Excuses, where she became a full-time cast member in 2011. In addition, Kowal served as Chair of the DisCon III Worldcon in 2021.
