Who is Kyren Wilson?

Kyren Wilson is an English snooker player who has won four major ranking titles. Kyren Wilson originally rose to prominence after winning the 2015 Shanghai Masters.

The Warrior recently made headlines after a spectacular performance versus “The Rocket” Ronnie O’Sullivan in the 2020 World Championship.

His talent astounded his parents when he beat Peter Ebdon in a game of pool at the age of six.

He takes advantage of a rare sunny day in England by spending the day at the beach.

He is a brilliant young snooker player, but behind his success is usually a story of adversity.

Because of his terrible performance, he did not even qualify for ranking tournaments at one point.

He only competed in PTC events for two seasons.

Childhood and Life

The Warrior was born on December 23, 1991.

His father, Rob Wilson, and mother, Sonya Wilson, raised him in Kettering, England.

He and his brother Taylor Wilson grew raised in Kettering.

Kyren’s first encounter with the pool was when he was only two years old.

His godparents gave him a golf set without teaching him how to play.

His instincts kicked in, and he placed the golf balls on the footstool, turned the golf club around, and began cueing.

Kyren used to practice with Peter Ebdon when he was younger.

When Kyren was approximately 11 years old, Peter owned a school about 10 miles away from his house.

Kyren used to attend summer school there for an entire day every now and then.

He kept his hungry mother waiting in the academy for lengthy periods of time because he couldn’t stop playing with Peter.

A Lowly Beginning

Throughout his childhood, Kyren competed in numerous amateur and junior events.

When he had to stay overnight at a hotel for a tournament the next morning, he skipped the hotel and arrived at the venue as soon as possible the next day.

His parents couldn’t afford to pay for a hotel stay, so he stayed at home.

They were a single-income family.

His mother drove him to the venue on the day of the match because they couldn’t afford a hotel room.

Kyren used to see Facebook pictures of the other competitors enjoying their stay at the hotel and would tell his mother about it.

His mother used to say,

“When you get to the finals at 7 p.m. the next night, you’ll just believe you’ve got to work even harder.”

His mother believes that his early career molded who he is today.

His hardworking personality and perseverance stem from his impoverished background.

Before Important Matches

Kyren, according to his wife Sophie, prefers to stick to a tight protocol before his big day.

He wants to drink tea at a certain hour, sleep at a certain time, and has evolved into a different man.

His wife noted that Kyren becomes a different person than he typically is, that “he is not shut off in any way, but he is already in the zone.”

He’s Snooker Kyren, and everything has to be at the same time.”

Wife, Children, and Family Marriage and Children

Kyren Wilson and his long-term girlfriend have been married since 2016.

On June 5, 2016, seven years after the meeting, the couple exchanged sacred vows.

The couple had intended to marry in September 2015 but had to postpone it due to the birth of their first kid.

They named their first son Finely Wilson after that. Bailey Wilson, their second son, arrived on September 8, 2017.

Sophie Lauren and Kyren Wilson met in 2009 and soon fell in love; they began dating the following year.

They haven’t been separated since that first meeting.

They have two children together and show no signs of marital discord.

He also teaches his children how to play their newly acquired mini pool/snooker set.

During his spare time, he teaches his two sons how to hold the stick properly and where to smash the cue ball.

Wife and Children

In a 2016 interview with Eurosport, Kyren stated, and we quote,

“I was a child two years ago, but I’ve grown into a man since then.” I have a one-year-old son and will be married in June.”

He frequently compliments his wife’s skills to care for his family while he is away at tournaments to make her feel special.

Following that thought, he surprised his wife with a Range Rover for their fourth anniversary.

In addition to caring for the family, his wife runs Soph & Co, a baby clothes company.

He went on to say that he is a part-time father because he has to travel a lot for the events in which he participates.

Kyren is inspired by his father, who remained strong while suffering from multiple sclerosis for the majority of his adult life.

He used to look for his father in the crowd at the time to get the encouragement he needed to play so well.

Work

Wilson’s amateur career began in the 2009/10 season.

His performance that season wasn’t spectacular, as you’d expect from an amateur, but it was adequate.

Kyren won the sixth and third events of the International Open Series.

He finished fifth in overall performance.

The respectable performance of the English player secured him a spot on the 2010/11 Main Tour.

First Professional Appearance

Kyren competed in his maiden UK Championship and his first World Championship in the 2010/11 season.

In the UK, he overcame McCulloch and Paul Davidson before losing the next bout to Rory McLeod.

Similarly, Rory defeated him on the same stage in the World Championship.

Before meeting Rory, he defeated Joe Swail and Dermot McGlinchey.

Things were not going well for the newly-promoted footballer.

He finished the season in 72nd place in the world.

Only the top 64 players were qualified to compete in the following ranking events.

In a desperate attempt to make a comeback, he entered the Qualifying School, but despite good performance, he did not qualify for the ranking events.

Kyren was an amateur player who left the snooker tour but competed in all 12 PTC (Players Tour Championship) events.

His performance put him in 72nd place on the PTC Order of Merit.

After that, the English snooker player had no choice but to return to the Qualifying School, where he only won one event out of three.

He competed in PTC events during the 2012/13 season because he did not qualify for the ranking events.

In the Kay Suzanne Memorial Trophy, he defeated Tom Ford, Stephen Maguire, and Jamie Jones.

Back to the ranking events

His 75th place in the PTC Order of Merit secured him a spot in ranking tournaments the following season.

In the 2013/14 season, Kyren competed in the Shangai Masters, International Championship, China Open, and World Championship.

He won four bouts in the SHnagai Mastera tournament.

Kyren overcame Marcus Campbell in the qualifying round and reached the main stage of a ranking event for the first time.

Later, he played Stuart Bingham, and despite missing the highest possible break, he won the match.

Following that, he fought Marco Fu and won, but lost in the quarterfinals to Michael Holt.

Kyren’s World Championship performance that year was outstanding.

He began the tournament by defeating Chris Norbury, then Alfie Burden, and Rod Lawler.

Following that, he defeated Graeme Dott, bringing the qualifying stage to a close.

He was eliminated from the tournament after losing to Ricky Walden in the first round.

Despite earning two centuries, he lost against Ricky by a score of 10-7.

Kyren Wilson was overcome with emotion after winning the World Championship semi-finals

Athletes and players typically cry tears of excitement after achieving a goal.

However, Kyren shouted in agony after defeating Anthony McGill in the 2020 World Snooker Championship.

Anthony changes the score from 14-11 in Kyren’s advantage to 16-15 in his favor.

Anthony won his third frame after the Warrior missed the green ball.

Anthony had already won the opening two frames.

Despite being overpowered in the last moments of the game, Kyren was able to extend the game to the final frame.

Kyren won the match with a spectacular green pot clinch.

Aftereffects of Victory

After an hour-long, heated, and dramatic final frame, the Englishman defeated Anthony, securing his maiden World Championship finals appearance.

“I had hoped for this moment, but I didn’t want to arrive like way,” Wilson apologized.

Anthony had missed the snooker eight times until Kyren defied a green in the final frame to seal the deal.

Of course, snooker fans went berserk since Anthony played so well throughout the game, but he did not win.

Fans remarked that it was the most ludicrous final frame in snooker history.

“I can’t believe it ended that way.”

“I didn’t want to send someone home on a whim,” Kyren murmured, his eyes welling up with tears.

Stephen Hendry, the seven-time World Snooker Champion, described the match as “the oddest finish he has ever seen.”

After defeating Anthony, he faced Ronnie O’Sullivan in the finals, which favored Ronnie.

With an 18-8 score, he lost the World Championship to Ronnie.

 Salary

Kyren has earned a total of £2,164,636 from the tournaments he has competed in, which is nearly $3 million USD.

He has preserved most of it and is estimated to have a net worth of 2.5 million dollars.

Similarly, the Warrior is not a flamboyant person; he does not buy expensive items for show-off purposes; perhaps this is why he has preserved the majority of his money.

On the other hand, he may have invested his riches in some buildings or enterprises; he appears to be a fairly sensible individual, but we can’t be certain.
