Early Career

Following in his parents’ footsteps, Porziis started playing basketball at the age of six.

He used to go to offseason training sessions with his older brother Janis, a professional soccer player in Europe when he was 12 years old.

Up until the age of 15, he participated in youth league play with BK Liepjas Lauvas, the most well-known team in Liepaja, the city where he was born.

Around this time, teams in Spain and Italy received a video of him from a Latvian agency.

In an effort to entice international talent for its young squads, Baloncesto Sevilla, a club with a professional team competing in Spain’s Liga ACB, contacted Porziis for a tryout in 2010.

Because of his anemia, Porziis had fewer red blood cells than normal. This led to exhaustion, breathlessness, and an inability to exercise.

Nevertheless, he gradually became better and improved his game.

Kristaps struggled to master the language in Seville in addition to his physical problems. He was reluctant to try out again because of this.

Professional Career

On July 31, 2019, Dallas acquired Kristaps from New York in a sensational seven-player transaction.

The athlete averaged 18.4 points, 7.6 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 2.0 blocks, and 31.2 minutes per game for New York and Dallas in 243 games (242 starts).

After beginning his professional career with Spain’s Cajasol Seville, Kristaps was selected by New York as the fourth overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft.

He was chosen for the Knicks’ NBA All-Rookie First Team in 2015–16.

The youngster came in second place behind Minnesota’s Karl-Anthony Towns in the vote for the Kia NBA Rookie of the Year Award.

With 100 or more 3-pointers made and 100 or more shots blocked in a season as a 21-year-old in 2016–17, Kristaps is one of only three players in NBA history who are 22 years old or younger.
