Professional Career

In the 1980s, she introduced the theory of intersectionality to feminist theory. It is believed that intersectionality was first introduced in 1987 in a seminal paper written by Kimberle for the University of Chicago Legal Forum.

The study of how overlapping or intersecting social identities, particularly minority identities, relate to systems and structures of dominance, oppression, or discrimination is known as intersectional theory.

Her work is also concerned with intersectional feminism.

It is a subcategory of intersectional theory. Intersection feminism investigates the overlapping systems of oppression and discrimination that women face as a result of their sexuality, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status.

Kimberle was appointed full professor at Columbia Law School in 1995.

She founded and directed the Center for Intersectionality and Social Policy Studies, which was established in 2011.

Kimberle joined the faculty of the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law in 1986 after completing her LL.M.

She established critical race theory and lectured on civil rights, critical race studies, and constitutional law. She currently teaches four classes at the University of California that have no prerequisites.

Advanced Critical Race Theory, Intersectional Perspectives on Race, Civil Rights, Gender and the Criminalization of Women and Girls, and Race, Law, and Representation are among her courses.
