He later moved to The Washington Post, where he received the Laurence Stern fellowship in 1992 while working as a staff writer on national news. Jonathan was The Guardian’s Washington Correspondent from 1993 to 1997.

From 2002 to 2004, he also worked as an occasional columnist for the Daily Mirror. From 2005 to 2007, he wrote a weekly column for the London Evening Standard.

In addition, he contributes a monthly column to The Jewish Chronicle, and his work has appeared in The New York Review of Books, Newsweek, The New Republic, and The New York Times.

He was named ‘Columnist of the Year’ at the What the Papers Say awards in 2002, and he also received the David Watt Prize for Journalism in 2008.

He currently writes a Saturday column for The Guardian. He was also the executive editor of The Guardian’s opinion section from May 2014 to 2016.
