John Yoo is a lawyer and retired government official. John Yoo currently holds the position of Emanuel S. Heller Professor of Law at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law. He rose to prominence in the early 2000s as a result of his legal opinions on executive power, warrantless wiretapping, and the Geneva Conventions while working in the Department of Justice’s Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) during the George W. Bush administration.

Yoo has held the Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Law at the University of Trento and has taught at the Free University of Amsterdam, the University of Chicago, and the Chapman University School of Law.

He has also been a visiting scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank in Washington, DC, since 2003.

Yoo also contributes a monthly column called “Closing Arguments” to The Philadelphia Inquirer. Yoo authored and continues to author academic books such as Crisis and Command.

In 2019, he said on Fox News, “Some might call that espionage,” when discussing Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, the National Security Council’s top Ukraine expert.

The next day, Alexander was scheduled to testify before Congress about Trump’s request to Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko to launch an investigation into his political rival Joe Biden.

Yoo later apologized, saying, “I truly regret the choice of words,” and that he was referring to Ukrainian officials rather than Alexander.
