Who is John Roderick?

John Roderick is a musician, singer, songwriter, podcaster, and politician. John Roderick is the lead singer and guitarist for The Long Winters, a rock band. John co-hosts the podcasts Roderick On The Line, Road Work, and Omnibus and was a touring member of the rock band Harvey Danger. He apologized on his website after being dubbed “Bean Dad” after a Twitter thread about his daughter struggling to use a can opener went viral.

Early Life and Childhood

John Roderick was born on September 13, 1968, in Seattle, Washington, United States, John was born. He has the age 53.

John’s father was a Washington State legislator as well as a World War II veteran.

His mother was a computer programmer who worked her way up to an executive position with the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System. From his father, he has three older half-siblings and a sister, Susan.

In 1971, John’s family relocated to Anchorage, Alaska. His parents divorced in 1973, and his mother relocated him and Susan to Washington state, but he soon returned to Anchorage.

Education Details

John Roderick returned to Seattle after graduating from East Anchorage High School. Later, in 1987, John enrolled at Gonzaga University but dropped out after two years.

After three decades of undergraduate study, he received a BA from the University of Washington in 2019.

Professional Career

Roderick began co-hosting the Roderick on the Line podcast with Merlin Mann in September 2011. On August 13, 2015, he and co-host Dan Benjamin released the first episode of their second podcast, Road Work.

On September 7, 2017, HowStuffWorks announced the launch of a new show called Omnibus, which will be co-hosted by John and former Jeopardy! champion Ken Jennings.

They discuss topics that they fear will be lost to history. On December 7, 2017, the first episode was released.

Friendly Fire, a weekly podcast about war films hosted by John, Adam Pranica, and Benjamin Ahr Harrison, ran from January 12, 2018, to January 22, 2021.

Following the breakup of Harvey Danger, John co-founded the indie rock band The Long Winters with former Harvey Danger singer/songwriter Sean Nelson.

In 2001, he wrote the band’s first album, The Worst You Can Do Is Harm, which was released on Barsuk Records.

Since then, the band has released two more albums, When I Pretend to Fall (2003) and Putting the Days to Bed (2006), as well as one EP, Ultimatum (2005). The band still performs live, most recently at the inaugural Upstream Festival in 2017.

In 2010, John was appointed as a founding member of the Seattle Music Commission by former Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn.

Encouraged by McGinn, John announced his candidacy for Seattle City Council Position 8, one of two positions on the council that represent the entire city, in 2015.

He finished third in the citywide primary, receiving 15.90% of the vote.
