Professional Career

Kiriakou is a CIA torture exposer. The CIA approached the new Obama Justice Department nearly 5 years after the Justice Department determined John did not commit a crime by giving an interview to ABC in 2007.

The CIA had already conducted its own unprecedented crackdown on government leaks and had requested that the case be reopened by the Obama Justice Department.

On January 23, 2012, John was charged with disclosing classified information to journalists, including the name of a covert CIA officer and information revealing the role of another CIA employee, Deuce Martinez, in classified activities.

In addition, John was accused of lying to the CIA in order to have his book published.

In 2012, John received the Joe A. Callaway Award for Civic Courage, which is given to “national security whistleblowers who have stood up for constitutional rights and American values at great personal and professional risk.”

In July 2018, the journalist signed a $50,000 agreement with a Trump adviser in exchange for lobbying for a pardon.

If it was granted, he promised an additional $50,000 as a bonus.

John was recruited into the CIA by a graduate school professor who was also a senior CIA official. John worked as a Middle East analyst specializing in Iraq for the first eight years of his career.

John held a Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information security clearance during his time with the CIA.

He was assigned to the American Embassy in Manama, Bahrain, as an economic officer from 1994 to 1996. He then went back to Washington, D.C., and worked in Iraq until 1998.

Following that, John was assigned to the CIA’s Directorate of Operations as a counter-terrorism operations officer.

In the year 20000, he returned to CIA Headquarters. Following the September 11th terrorist attacks, John was appointed Chief of Counter-Terrorist Operations in Pakistan.

In that capacity, he led a series of military raids on al-Qaeda safehouses, capturing dozens of al-Qaeda fighters.

On the night of March 28, 2002, he led a raid in Faisalabad, Pakistan, where they apprehended Abu Zubaydah, who was thought to be an al-third-ranking Qaeda official at the time.

After a domestic assignment in 2002-2004, John resigned from the CIA in 2004.
