Sandra Smith’s and John Conolly’s love story
Smith previously worked at a hedge fund in New York before relocating to Chicago.
Her family worked in the financial trading community, and she grew up in New York.
She eventually relocated to Chicago, where she found work as a sales trader. The head of the firm introduced her on her first day of work.
Smith was finally introduced to the last person on the desk who was completely uninterested in her.
Conolly, her future husband, was the one.
Conolly was 35 at the time, and Smith was 23.
The journalist had a favorable first impression of him, describing him as “the tall, bow tie-wearing, wavy-haired, nerdy but handsome guy.”
He gave her a friendly smile and introduced himself. He realized at that moment that he would spend the rest of his life with Smith.
“I knew right then that she was the girl I was going to marry,” he said. But there was a minor snag before their love story could begin.
Conolly’s last two weeks on the job were Smith’s first two weeks. He intended to quit his job and start his own business.
Fortunately, Smith made the first move. She was eating her lunch at work one day while watching TV.
“There was something very familiar about the guy providing commentary on the financial television program,” she noticed.
The speaker was dressed in a bow tie.
She realized Conolly was not at his desk and asked others if the man on the television was him.
They confirmed it, and when Smith returned to the office, he inquired about his experience.
Conolly then invited her to try out for a TV spot at First Business News at CME Group.
They were the owners of commodity exchanges such as the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Smith was nervous, but Conolly calmed her down. After Conolly left the firm, Smith took over his job as a TV commentator.
The couple gradually grew closer. Conolly became a special person in Smith’s life.
She invited him to her first apartment in the city to look around.
“There was a bodega in the basement with a bottle of really overpriced Veuve Clicquot and a sleeve of plastic champagne glasses,” he recalled.
The couple then went on their first date at the Symphony Orchestra.
On their second date at the Museum of Contemporary Art, they introduced some family members. — Connolly invited his mother and stepfather, who were joined by Smith’s cousin.
After that, the couple became serious about each other, and their love story began.
From courtship to marriage
Conolly had not had many relationships prior to Smith. The journalist joked that she benefited from it.
“I don’t think I would have gotten all of John Conolly if I hadn’t met him at that point in his life,” she said.
They soon traveled around on business trips.
This went on for about a year before Smith was offered a job at Bloomberg Television in New York.
The couple went on to have a long-distance relationship. But they managed to make it work.
Smith flew to Chicago almost every Friday to see her boyfriend. It was difficult, but they never gave up, and Conolly never complained.
He understood how important Smith’s career was to her and supported her ambitions. Smith received another job offer from Fox Business after a year at Bloomberg.

But, once again, the couple did not let his obstacle derail their relationship.
On May 1, 2010, the couple married at the Holy Name Cathedral.
They did, however, maintain a long-distance relationship because Smith was in New York and Conolly was in Chicago.
Conolly then relocated to New York in January 2011. He sold his company and relocated to the city. Finally, the couple was together and celebrating their marriage.
Their children were born in 2013 and 2015. Their daughter Cora was born in 2013, and their son John Jr. was born in 2015.
