He was a senior State Department official in the Obama administration.

Joel has worked for three different federal agencies in both Republican and Democratic administrations. He worked for the DOE, USAID, and the State Department.

Joel was an official government witness and testified to the House Select Committee on Benghazi in January 2015, while serving as the State Department’s Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Legislative Affairs during the Obama administration.

In 2016, he ran for Congress in Maryland’s 8th congressional district. Joel ran in the Democratic primary for the Maryland House of Delegates in 2018.

He was a founding board member of the Jewish Democratic Council of America, which was formed in the aftermath of the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017.

Joel joined Bernie Sanders’ 2020 presidential campaign as director of Jewish outreach 2020.
