Who is Jim Al Khalili?

Jim Al Khalili is a physicist, author, and broadcaster. Jim Al Khalili is a regular BBC radio and television broadcaster and presenter of science programs. He is also a theoretical physicist and the chair of public engagement in science at the University of Surrey. He also served as President of Humanists UK from January 2013 to January 2016.

Early Life and Childhood

Jim Al Khalili was born in Baghdad, Iraq, in September 1962. Al Khalili is 59 years old and holds his birthday on September 20.

Al Khalili is the son of an English librarian mother and an Iraqi Air Force engineer father. He moved to the United Kingdom permanently in 1979.

Education Details

Jim Al Khalili spent three years finishing and retaking his A-levels in 1982. Later, Al Khalili enrolled at the University of Surrey, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in physics in 1986.

In 1989, he received a Doctor of Philosophy degree in nuclear reaction theory from the University of Surrey. Before returning to Surrey in 1991, Al Khalili worked as a SERC Postdoctoral Fellow at University College London for two years.

Professional Career

He has written excellent books and peer-reviewed research papers which can be found on Google Scholar and Scopus.

He became a lecturer in 1992 and was awarded a five-year EPSRC Advanced Research Fellowship in 1994. Later, he was hired as a full-time lecturer in the Department at Surrey.

In 2000, Al Khalili was elected Fellow of the Institute of Physics, and in 2001, he was promoted to Senior Lecturer. He was elected to the BA Council in 2003.

As a professor, he has given students lectures on science engagement activities as well as science popularization. In addition, in 2007, he received the Royal Society’s Michael Faraday Prize for Science Communication.

Al Khalili serves on the British Council’s Science and Engineering Advisory Group, the Royal Society’s Equality and Diversity Panel, the Editorial Board of the open-access journal PMC Physics A, and as an Associate Editor of Advanced Science Letters.

He is a member of the Cheltenham Science Festival’s Advisory Committee.

In addition, in the 2021 Birthday Honours, he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to science and public engagement in STEM.

He has appeared on television and radio, and he also writes for the British press. He has co-presented several documentaries and interviewed notable scientists during his appearances.

Furthermore, he hosts a regular “Jim meets…” interview series at the University of Surrey, which is available on his YouTube channel. In 2012, Al Khalili hosted a Horizon special on BBC 2.
