Career

Ion won his first national arm-wrestling title at the age of 18 with no prior experience.

He has been the unchallenged champion ever since he began specific arm-wrestling training in 2005, nine years after his debut.

Similarly, the Romanian-born athlete finished 9th and 6th in the left and right arm categories, respectively, in his first important World Championship delegation.

Furthermore, during the 2005 World Championship, he came close to winning it all but came up short, finishing second in both categories.

During the 2006 World Championship, he finished second and third in the left and right arm categories, respectively.

The first major championship victory

Despite a number of setbacks, Ion never looked back, winning the world’s major arm-wrestling championship during the 2007 event.

At the age of 29, he won his first world title at the XXIXth World Arm-wrestling Championships in Bulgaria. Ion struggled to adjust to the left-arm category after being placed in a difficult group.

He also had to fight in ten left-arm championship matches, with five of his opponents being former world champions.

In the second round, he was stunned by Bulgarian champion Stoyan Golemanov, who he defeated.

He rebounded to reach the final against Russian Dzambolat Tsoriev after winning the required penultimate games.

Even though he was undefeated at the time, Oncescu upset Tsoriev 2-0 to win the world title for the first match in his career. He also had to compete in eight bouts to be eligible for the right arm title.

He had to fight in 20 matches, 10 for each arm, on his path to winning two world titles in a row.

In addition, he won the Nemiroff World Cup after defeating American arm-wrestling champion John Brzenk, who was born in Poland.

Oncescu described it as the realization of a lifetime ambition, but he ultimately lost against Ukrainian Andriy Pushkar.

In both the hand and foot divisions, he won his first major European Championship at the end of 2009.
