Henry Bibby is a former basketball player and currently a coach. Henry Bibby is reportedly one of the iconic players in the NBA, having played for 14 years. Following his career, he eventually found himself in the same arena as a coach with the Tijuana Zonkeys.

Henry has played for five different clubs during his career: the New York Knicks, New Orleans Jazz, Philadelphia 76ers, Lancaster Lightning, and San Diego Clippers.

Early Life, Family, and Education

Henry Bibby was born to Evelyn and Charlie Bibby on November 24, 1949, in the North Carolina town of Franklinton.

James (Jim) Blair Bibby, his older brother, is his only sibling.

Henry appears to have lost both of his parents. To be more specific, his father died in 1983 and his mother died in 2003.

Although the causes of death for both parents were not revealed, it was reported that Henry’s mother’s health was declining from a young age.

Evelyn died at the age of 83, and a burial service was held at the First Baptist Church in Franklinton.

Bibby Jim (Brother)

Jim Bibby (October 29, 1944 – February 16, 2010), his older brother, was a Major League Baseball pitcher.

Jim pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals, Texas Rangers, Cleveland Indians, and Pittsburgh Pirates throughout his career, which spanned 1972 to 1984.

Jim was the only graduate of Fayetteville State University to ever make it to the major leagues.

During his career, he was a member of the 1979 World Series Champions and the 1990 Senior Professional Baseball Association.

Jim also became a coach after finishing his career as a pitcher, spending 16 years as a minor-league pitching coach.

Overall, Jim Bibby died of bone cancer on February 16, 2010, at the age of 65, in a Lynchburg, Virginia hospital.

Professional Career

The New York Knicks selected Bibby with the 11th overall choice in the fourth round.

Bibby spent two seasons with the New Orleans Jazz after two seasons with the Knicks.

He also spent four years with the Philadelphia 76ers before moving on to the Lancaster Lightning and San Diego Clippers for a single season.

In total, Bibby appeared in 675 games, averaging 8.6 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per season.

Coaching Profession

Bibby found a way to continue in the NBA as a coach shortly after retiring as a player.

He reportedly began coaching with the Continental Basketball Association (CBA). Before joining the Arizona Wildcats, Bibby worked as an assistant coach for his former squad, the Lancaster Lightning.

He coached the squad for three years, beginning as an assistant coach and winning a CBA championship.

Following that, he worked with many other teams while coaching the Winnipeg Thunder.

Between the intermissions, he coached the Baltimore Lightning, Springfield Fame, New Jersey Jammers, Savannah Spirits / Tulsa Fast Breakers, and Oklahoma City Cavalry.

After working with the men’s basketball team at the University of Southern California, he made his coaching debut in 1996. (USC).

During his nine seasons with the squad, he had a 131-111 overall won-loss record.

In April 2005, he became the head coach of the Los Angeles Sparks of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA).

With only 28 games under his belt, he was hired as an assistant coach by the Philadelphia 76ers.

Not to add, Bibby only worked for a season before being appointed as an assistant coach by the Memphis Grizzlies.

Following that, he worked for the Detroit Pistons before joining the Tijuana Zonkeys.

Henry hired Kobe Bryant’s father, Joe Bryant, as an assistant coach after being hired as the head coach of the Los Angeles Sparks.

Some suggested that Kobe must have urged the team’s owner, Dr. Buss, to hire his father, or that the Lakers wanted Kobe to stay on the team as long as he was on his best behavior.

However, it was then announced that after 28 games, Joe had replaced Henry as head coach.

Well, this question led him to commit to an inspiring new act.

He had noticed the homeless children in downtown Los Angeles long ago but did not take that much attention.

But one specific day, he surely wondered where they were.

To his knowledge, there were 26,000 homeless kids in Orange Country alone, and he decided to do something warm and helpful for them.

And then, voila, he held a free basketball camp Saturday and Sunday at the Asics Gym in Irvine.

Henry also planned to establish similar camps at USC and EI Segundo as a part of his Bibby Star Athletes program.

Personal Life & Relationship

Henry Bibby is a married man. Actually, to be exact, he is a divorced man. Bibby married a Trinidad and Tobago native girl, Virginia Bibby.

Virginia had been supportive and all alongside him in the days. However, the duo’s marriage fell apart, and they ended up parting ways.

However, they do have a son, Mike Bibby, born on May 13, 1978.

Furthermore, their parted ways did cause a stir in both’ lives for the time being, and Mike ended up living with his mother.
