Halil Mutlu was born in Postnik, Bulgaria, on July 14, 1973.

He was conceived by his parents, Hatice and Alil Mutlu. His parents also had Turkish ancestry.

Naim Suleymanoglu influenced Halil soon after he came in Turkey.

Career Information

In 1994, the Turkish weightlifter took home both the World and European titles.

Soon after his victory, Mutlu rose to prominence as a weightlifter.

In 1992, Halil competed in the 52 kg division for the first time in the Olympics.

The athlete came in fifth place during the relevant tournament.

In 1996, Mutlu also set a new world record in the 54kg division and won the title of world champion. He won the gold medal by 7.5 kg and shattered the previous world record.

Additionally, he defeated Adrian Jigău in the 1996 World Championship by 20 kg.

Consequently, by defeating the former silver medallist, Mutlu established a new world record.

Halil won gold at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and shortly after setting an Olympic record.

Halil won the gold medal in the 1999 World Championship and had broken more than 20 world records by the year’s conclusion.

As a result, he received the title of Best Sportsman of the Year in Turkey that same year.

Halil further established three world records: one in the clean and jerk (167.5 kg), one in the snatch (138 kg), and one in the total weight lifted (305 kg).

Injury

Due to a shoulder injury, Halil briefly dropped to the 62 kg division in 2003.

He is the fourth weightlifter to have three gold medals at the Olympics (2004, 2000, 1996).
