Gwen Shamblin Lara attended a local high school before enrolling at the University of Tennessee, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in dietetics. 

She subsequently went on to receive her master’s degree in food and nutrition from Memphis State University.

Lara began her consulting business in 1980, concentrating primarily on weight loss.

In 1986, she founded the Weight Down Workshop, a weight loss program with no restricted foods, no exercise regimen, no weigh-ins, and no calorie counting. 

The American Dietetic Association suggested that it missed several key features, whereas The Philadelphia Inquirer stated that it included and fostered the discipline in participants to eat only when hungry and cease eating when full. 

Lara began conducting a program in 1991 or 1992 at Bellevue Baptist Church in the Memphis region that consisted of 12-week sessions guided by video and audiotapes, followed by discussion and prayer.

The curriculum developed such popularity in Europe that it was given in around 600 churches and at least 35 US states until 1994. 

The program hit a snag in July 1996.

In 2001, a local Nashville news station, NewsChannel 5, aired a report titled “Is it a ministry or just a giant business?” and towards the end of the interview, Lara stated that half of the money was donated to the government and the other half was utilized to help people in need. 

Fame

In 2002, a 40-acre plot of land in Brentwood, Tennessee, was purchased for the construction of a church edifice, which was completed in 2004. 

The church has members from all over the world, including the United States, Australia, Asia, Europe, and Canada.

Lara published her first book, The Weight Down Diet, in 1997, explaining how to use spirituality to conquer overeating. 

The book sold over 1.2 million copies, and the publisher, Doubleday, reported selling 400 thousand copies in less than a year.

 Later, she wrote a number of other works, including rising Above, as well as a devotional book called Exodus, which she self-published.

Death

Gwen Shamblin Lara perished in a plane crash on May 29, 2021, according to the latest news.

Gwen was aboard an aircraft with six other church leaders, including her husband Joe Lara and son-in-law Brandon Hannah. 

They were in N66BK, her 1982 Cessna Citation 501 private jet, on their way to Palm Beach, Florida. After taking off, the plane crashed into Percy Priest Lake, which is located near Smyrna, Tennessee.
