Glory Margo was a member of several WNBA teams. She was awarded the Polish Gold Cross of Merit in 1999.

Dydek, who was born on April 28, 1974, was selected first overall in the 1998 WNBA draft.

She was a center who also coached for the Northside Wizards of the Queensland Basketball League.

Early Years

Margo Dydek was born on April 28, 1974, in Warsaw, Poland, to parents who were both over 6 feet tall.

Katarzyna and Marta, Dydek’s sisters, Katarzyna, her older sister, played for the Colorado Xplosion, while Marta, her younger sister, played professionally in Spain.

Margo, like her older sister Kashka, began playing basketball in a local club named “Huragan” in Wolomin, Poland.

She then went on to play for the Poznan Olympia squad, as well as other Polish and French teams before moving to the United States.

A career in the WNBA

The Utah Starzz selected Margo Dydek first overall in the 1998 WNBA Draft.

The team was relocated to San Antonio and renamed the Silver Stars.

She was transferred to the Connecticut Sun on April 16, 2005, in exchange for Katie Feenstra.

She left the Connecticut Sun to sign with the Los Angeles Sparks, where Zheng Haixia previously played.

Death

Margo Dydek went into cardiac arrest and lost consciousness on May 19, 2011.

She was promptly taken by ambulance to a hospital in Brisbane.

Dydek was pregnant at the time, and she died eight days later, much to everyone’s surprise.
