Diaz reacted to Venus Raj’s fourth-place performance in Binibining Pilipinas.

Diaz believes Raj and other Filipina contestants would benefit from addressing pageant questions through an interpreter rather than in English.

“Because when you think of a Cebuana, they can hardly speak English and, of course, Tagalog,” she said again.

“Perhaps she should react in Bisaya.”

Cebuanos were incensed by her statement, believing Daz had disparaged their English skills.

Cebuano officials have asked her to apologize, including Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia and Congresswoman Rachel del Mar.

Gloria, ever the perfectionist, found no problems and instead clarified, stating, “Let me clear it once and for all.”

People should be able to express themselves or respond to queries in whichever language they choose.

They can say it in Cebuano if they are Cebuanos.

I didn’t claim they couldn’t communicate in English.

Say it in Ilocano if you’re Ilocano.

If you are an Ilocano who speaks good English, however, say it in English.

Say it in Spanish if you’re a Cebuano who speaks Spanish.

That’s exactly what I said and meant.
