Professional Career

Gemel played midget hockey with the Markham Majors before joining the North York Rangers of the Greater Toronto Major Midget Hockey League.

Later, in the Ontario Hockey League’s 2010 OHL Priority Selection, he was taken by the Owen Sound Attack with the No.120 overall pick.

Smith drew the Stars’ notice with his game points during Owen’s entire second season.

Gemel finished his OHL career with the London Knights.

Gemel was taken in the fourth round (#104) of the 2012 NHL Draft by the Dallas Stars.

Smith signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Dallas Stars on May 31, 2014.

After the Stars’ assignment to the AHL club, the Texas Stars, he made his professional debut the following year, in 2014-2015.

Gemel spent the next three seasons in the American Hockey League (AHL) with Texas before being called up by Dallas.

Debut in the NHL

Smith debuted with the National Hockey League on October 22, 2016. (NHL).

That night, Smith received his chance to play with the Stars, skating on the fourth line in a 3–0 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The Tampa Bay Lightning

Smith signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning on July 8, 2019. The Canadian player has appeared in five games and has three assists after re-signing in 2021.
