Fred announced in a blog post in early July 2018 that he would no longer be writing for Whiskey Advocate.

Fred has also appeared on CBS This Morning and NPR. As a result of his remarks, Conservatives publicly questioned the president’s trade policies.

Later that month, he launched his own magazine, Bourbon +. Along with founder and publisher John Thames, he served as editor-in-chief. Bourbon + is currently a quarterly magazine that provides high-quality, in-depth coverage of all aspects of the bourbon industry.

On July 11, 2017, Fred published “Will Trump Kill the Bourbon Boom?” in the New York Times. He discusses Trump’s threat to impose steel tariffs and the impact on the bourbon industry.
