Emi Canyn was born in Tacoma, Washington, on December 5, 1954, to now-deceased parents Floyd Schmdit and Eleanor Schmidt.

Emi Jo Schmidt was her given name when she was born. She was of white nationality and of American nationality.

Canyn was one of eight children, with four brothers (Kenneth Schmidt, H. Douglas Schmidt, Rob Schmidt, and Jon Schmidt) and three sisters (Barbara Reines, Jeri Ovekcha, and Joan McMahan, deceased).
