Edmilson’s career path

Edmilson joined So Paulo FC in 1995 and won two Campeonato Paulista championships.

He joined Olympique Lyonnais in France in 2000, with compatriot Caçapa, who was also a goalie at the time, and both were instrumental in the team winning the League Cup in his first season.

Similarly, Juninho Pernambucano went to Rhône-Alpes in the next off-season and regularly paired Edmlson in center midfield as they won three consecutive Ligue 1 titles.

In July 2004, Edmilson signed a €10 million contract with FC Barcelona.

On 19 September, he made his La Liga debut in a 1–1 away draw against Atlético Madrid and finished his debut season with only six matches as the Catalans won the national championship.

On 3 October, after coming on as a substitute for Samuel Eto’o during a home match against CD Numancia, he himself had to be substituted after only five minutes on the pitch and was sidelined for the rest of the season.

Edmlson healed entirely for the 2005–06 season, helping Frank Rijkaard’s club win the league and the UEFA Champions League.

He played in nine matches in the latter tournament, finishing six of them, including the first half of the final against Arsenal.

Edmilson, 32, departed Barcelona when his contract was not renewed after a disappointing 2007–08 season, both individually and collectively. Edmilson signed a one-year deal with Villarreal CF on May 23, 2008.

He returned to his homeland after just a few months, signing a two-year contract with Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras and scoring his first goal in the Copa Libertadores against Club Real Potos on January 29, 2009, just eight days after his arrival.

After failing to make an appearance in the So Paulo championship in 2010, Edmlson left Palmeiras and returned to Spain on 31 January, signing a five-month deal with struggling Real Zaragoza — at the time, he already possessed an Italian passport and so did not count as a foreign player.

Furthermore, he continued to play regularly for the remainder of the season as the Aragonese escaped relegation, and his contract was extended for another year.

On September 12, 2010, Edmilson scored his first goal for Zaragoza in a 3–5 home loss against Málaga CF.

Despite having only played 12 games in the club’s penultimate escape from relegation, he returned to his native country in June 2011 and joined Ceará Sporting Club.

On July 18, 2000, Edmilson made his national team debut against Paraguay.

He was chosen to participate in the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Japan and South Korea, where he helped the Seleço win their fifth title, participating in six of seven games and scoring his first (and only) international goal against Costa Rica in a 5–2 group stage triumph.

Edmlson was nominated to the team for the 2006 World Cup in Germany but was forced to withdraw owing to a knee injury acquired in pre-tournament training.
