Donovan Mitchell

Donovan Mitchell is an NBA basketball player. Donovan Mitchell was an NBA All-Star for three years in a row, from 2020 to 2022. He only began his professional career approximately five years ago, yet his astronomical point totals have continuously astounded practically everyone.

Donovan spent two years in college at the University of Louisville before making his professional league debut.

Aside from scoring, the Jazz shooting guard has a knack for stealing from his opponents.

Early Life, Family, and Education

Donovan Mitchell was born on September 7, 1996, in Elmsford, New York, to Donovan Sr. (Father) and Nicole Mitchell (Mother). Jordan, his younger sister, is in the family.

He was born and raised in New York and attended a local elementary school through the third grade.

He did, however, receive a scholarship to Greenwich Country Day School, one of the most renowned private schools in America.

Donovan Sr., his father, was a Minor League Baseball player who worked for the New York Mets as an executive when he was a kid.

As a result, he began playing baseball at a young age.

He was, nevertheless, passionate about sports, particularly baseball and basketball.

He was a very active and athletic boy who enjoyed going out to play with the other kids in the neighborhood.

Nicole, his mother, was a teacher and wanted her son to concentrate more on his schoolwork.

She had worked extremely hard to send her kid to an exceptional school because she was uncertain that he would pursue a career in sports.

Donovan, on the other hand, found it difficult to adjust to the new educational atmosphere, which was predominantly white and rich.

He often went hungry because he was from a middle-class household and couldn’t afford mid-day meals.

His mother, on the other hand, was constantly concerned about the happiness of her children and put up with a lot. She never informed them of her financial issues.

He became more serious from a carefree child to a conscious high schooler after learning about his mother’s struggles. Brewster Academy was his high school, and he graduated in 2015.

Salary and Net Worth

Donovan Mitchell has a net worth of $10 to $20 million.

In 2020, Donovan signed a five-year, $163 million contract with Utah Jazz. His average compensation has risen to nearly $32 million since that contract.

His annual pay in the continuing league, though, is around $28 million.

The NBA league games are his principal source of income as a professional basketball player. In his debut season, the Jazz paid him around $2.6 million.

The club has gradually upped his salary over time, based on his performance. He is now the Utah Jazz’s second-highest paid player. In his NBA career, he has already earned around $14.5 million.

He also earns a substantial sum of money from brand endorsements. When he began his career in 2017, he had signed a long-term contract with Adidas shoes.

With the brand, he has his signature D.O.N. series shoes. In 2019, Adidas released its first issue.

He’s also signed deals with doTerra, a Utah-based oil company, and BodyArmor, a sports drink company.

Charitable Works

The basketball player has not only improved his lifestyle by earning through his basketball career but has involved himself in various community betterment programs and charities.

He has founded a non-profit organization named Spidacare specifically to help those in need.

According to their official website, the sole aim of their organization is to build an equitable society.

Since its inception, they have been actively involved in conducting youth and athletic programs, providing scholarships to financially weak children, etc.

Moreover, he was involved individually in other campaigns, such as providing free sneakers to children in various schools in the Bronx area of New York.

He had also donated around $12 million to Greenwich Country Day School for scholarship schemes and a proper new gym at school.

Career in High School

He attended two separate high schools after graduating from Greenwich Day School and played high school basketball for two years at each.

Mitchell attended Canterbury School in Connecticut for his first and second years, where he played baseball and basketball. After hurting his wrist as a sophomore, he retired from baseball.

He also switched to Brewster Academy in New Hampshire, where he spent his final two high school basketball seasons.

He did well right away and quickly gained popularity among his teammates and coaches.

Donovan led the Brewster to two prep school national championship titles during his two years there, and he had opportunities to participate in a variety of settings, including the Jordan Brand Classic All-Star game.

College Life

Donovan had gotten scholarship offers from different universities during his final year of high school, including Kansas, Georgetown, and others.

He did, however, play college basketball at the University of Louisville.

His first-season performance was below average. He averaged 7.4 points and 3.4 rebounds per game as a rookie.

However, he had already decided to enter the NBA before graduating from college. But, in order to make that ambition a reality, he needed to substantially enhance his performance.

He averaged 15.6 points and 4.9 rebounds per game as a sophomore. He was also named to the First Team All-Atlantic Coast Conference for his efforts.

After his sophomore season in 2017, he felt confident enough to enter the NBA draft and declared it immediately.

Career Opportunities

Mitchell was selected thirteenth overall in the 2017 NBA draft by the Denver Nuggets. However, on July 5, 2017, the Nuggets traded him to the Utah Jazz, and he signed a rookie scale contract with them.

Donovan set the Summer League scoring record with 37 points in a game against the Memphis Grizzlies that year.

In his debut NBA regular season, he appeared in 79 games and performed better than in the Summer League.

In the second NBA season, he extended his scoring spree.

Mitchell led the Utah Jazz to the playoffs that season, averaging 21.4 points in five games, similar to his rookie season.

Covid’s First All-Star Selection

His third season with the Jazz began on October 23, 2019, when he produced 32 points and 12 assists in a game against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Because he was doing well, the NBA chose him for his first All-Star game on January 30, 2020.

Donovan also tested positive for Covid-19 in March 2020, which caused him to miss a lot of games. The NBA, however, banned the league for a few months after several other athletes contracted the virus.

He concluded the season with a 24.0 point per game average. He also renewed his contract with the club for another five years.

Injuries and later seasons

Mitchell’s fourth NBA season was his most successful in terms of results.

He scored 26.4 points per game, which was career-high.

However, it was also his poorest season because he only got to play in about 53 games.

He missed sixteen games after suffering an ankle injury in April.

Despite the injury, he went on to play in the playoffs.

His current performance in the NBA season 2021-22 is comparable to his prior seasons.

He has, however, been plagued by injuries this season.

In March 2022, he suffered another ankle injury in a loss to the Dallas Mavericks.

He did, however, play the entire game but is still uncertain about the future matchups.
