Minor League Professional Career (2009)

Not to mention, he was fortunate enough to get selected for the draft in the same year that he wanted to.

He was taken by the Cincinnati Reds with the 15th overall choice in the 2007 MLB Draft.

Mesoracao is best known to his Red followers in Punxsutawney as “The Groundhog.”

According to reports, Mesoraco is the third Reds player to be chosen with the first overall pick. He played in 40 games for the Gulf Coast League Reds during his debut season, batting.219 in 137 at-bats.

The same year, Mesoraco also participated in the single-A Dayton Dragons.

In 306 at-bats, he hit.261 with nine home runs and 42 runs batted in. On July 10 he hit a grand slam, and on July 21 he faced a two-homer game.

He was also invited to a big league spring training in 2009 to try out for a roster spot and a position.

In 2009, Mesoraco played with the single-A advanced Sarasota Reds but was unable to distinguish himself.

Over 312 at-bats, he hit.228 with eight home runs and 37 runs batted in. Relevantly, it marked his career’s low point.

For the 2010 season, Mesoraco transferred to the Lynchburg Hillcats of single-A advanced. In 43 games there, he had 43 hits for a.355 average. At this point in his career, his promotional campaign started.

He was promoted to the Carolina Mudcats of double-A, where he played in 56 games and hit.294 in.

Mesoraco was then promoted to the triple-A Louisville Bats, where he played in 14 games while hitting 12-for-52.

He finished the season with a total of 75 runs batted, 25 doubles, and 26 home runs.

2010

He was not chosen for the 2010 Major League Basketball Roster, despite the expectations of many. Ramón Hernández was selected by the Reds over Mesoraco.

Not every year in life is unfortunate; in addition, Baseball America ranked him as the top prospect in the Reds organization.

It would appear that effort must be rewarded in some way. Additionally, Jonathan Mayo of MLB.com listed Mesoraco as the 14th greatest prospect in baseball.

In the same way, he ultimately made the 40-man roster in 2011 and participated in the Future Games.

Reds of Cincinnati (2011- 2012)

On September 3, 2011, Mesoraco made its formal debut in the big league.

He played in 18 games, batting.180 with 2 home runs and 6 runs batted in.

Moving on to 2012, he did not have a great start.

For disagreeing with umpire Chad Fairchild while playing against the San Diego Padres, Mesoraco was ejected.

They got into a rather intense disagreement. The following night, he abandoned the game because of severe vertigo.

Mesoraco was placed on the 7-day disabled list after sustaining a slight brain injury. In addition, he missed three games while under suspension.

He only participated in 54 games in 2011, as opposed to 103 games in 2012. Nevertheless, Mesoraco finished 2013 on a high note. 42 runs batted in, 9 home runs, and 238 hits.

2014-2017

Mesoraco was disabled twice in 2014, but he still managed to hit.294 as of June 4 to keep his MLB position.

But his selection for the 2014 MLB All-Star Game ended up being the high point of his career.

He played in 114 games for the entire season, hitting 80 runs and hitting 25 home runs. Additionally, Mesoraco had the highest slugging percentage and most home runs among all catchers.

Mesoraco also agreed to a four-year, $28 million contract extension with the Reds, but he was forced to have left hip surgery and was forced to miss the remainder of the 2015 season.

The irony of life, that the saga of injuries did not finish here, must make Mesoraco unhappy.

When a torn labrum on his left shoulder was discovered in 2016, he had to undergo surgery once more. He was limited to 16 games and had a.140 average with 1 run batted in.

In a comparable instance, rookie Chicago Cubs player Jose Quintana hit him with a pitch in 2017, striking him on his left foot. For 56 games, Mesoraco struggled and scored.213.

Mets of New York (2018-2020)

In 2018, the Reds traded Mesoraco to the New York Mets in exchange for Matt Harvey and some cash. Later, he was a free agent.

He didn’t spend a lot of time with the Mets. On March 25, 2019, the Mets placed him on the restricted list after Mesoraco was unable to make their opening-day roster.

Later, according to B.B. Abbott, who is rumored to be Mesoraco’s agent, Mesoraco would forego reporting to his minor league assignment in favor of retiring.

Mesoraco decided on a coaching career later and began working as a volunteer assistant on July 10, 2020, at the University of Pittsburgh.
