Richard had no idea that one day his son would play for the Celtics, his favorite NBA team, and become one of the league’s most well-known players.
Before starting high school, Derrick showed his commitment to basketball. In Colorado at the same time, a basketball program called Nothing But Net had just been launched by Marcus Mason, a former university coach.

He chose to attend Parker’s Legend High School for his high school studies, and as it was a relatively new institution, he had little trouble getting on their basketball team.
As he advanced very well, White rapidly became well-liked by his teammates.
Later, he enrolled at the University of Colorado, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Business Management.

Career in High School
Being a 5’6″ freshman, Derrick was not particularly impressive to the team management when he first enrolled at Colorado’s Legend High School.
But because Kevin Boley, his coach, saw great potential in him, he gave him good instruction.
White was quite driven as a result and started practicing his athleticism and shooting techniques.
The basketball team from the Legend initially took part in the 3A level tournament because they were a beginner squad.
Later, White guided them to the 5A tournament, the highest level of competition in the state.
He also reached a height of over six feet as a senior, finishing the year with averages of 17.1 points and 3.8 rebounds per game.
Sadly, after graduation, he received no scholarship offers from many prestigious universities.
Career in College
White had to settle with the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs because he graduated from high school as a lowly recruited student.
But head coach Jeff Culver, who had just been hired, was sure he would succeed.
He was actually given the opportunity to play for the UCCS Mountain Lions by Culver. Derrick experienced a growth spurt, just as Culver had anticipated, and before the start of his first season, he had reached a height of 6 feet 4 inches.
As a result, he participated in about three NCAA Division II college seasons for the Lions.
He made great strides every year, and in his final year of college, he was given the chance to play for the Colorado Buffaloes of the University of Colorado Boulder.
He played in 34 games during his senior year, scoring 18.1 points and 4.1 rebounds on average.
Professional Career
In the 2017 NBA Draft, the San Antonio Spurs picked White with the twenty-ninth overall choice. He was one of the 15 athletes that did not make the top 150 high school prospects list published by Rivals.com.
On July 6, 2017, Derrick committed to the Spurs. Later, they added him to the NBA Summer League roster for 2017.
The team assigned him to the Austin Spurs for the NBA G League after he participated in a few regular-season NBA games.
Unfortunately, he fractured his wrist and missed a few games due to his absence from the court.
He later joined the San Antonio Spurs again after his rehabilitation, playing in a few more regular-season games. With 3.2 points and 1.5 rebounds per game, Derrick had a subpar first campaign.
The club nonetheless gave him plenty of opportunities to play in his second season despite his subpar first-season performance.
His performance was admirable despite the fact that he had just recently recovered from a foot injury.
He also played for the Spurs for three additional seasons while continuing to develop his skills. In his final season with the Spurs, he averaged 14.4 points and 5.6 assists per game.
His four-year contract extension had been announced by the San Antonio Spurs in 2021, but on February 10, 2022, they sent White to the Boston Celtics.
He competed for the United States in the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup in addition to his club career.
