Fisher held the NBA record for the most postseason games played until LeBron James broke it in 2020.
In game 5 of the 2004 Western Conference Semifinals, the former NBA player also hit a buzzer-beater with 0.4 seconds remaining.
While playing for the Lakers, he faced the San Antonio Spurs.
This is Fisher’s 18th-best playoff moment of all time.
Childhood and Family
Derek Fisher was born in the Arkansas city of Little Rock. Annette Fisher is his mother’s name.
His father’s name is also John Fisher.
Derek’s work ethic and dedication were evident from a young age, but basketball was always his motivator.
Derek’s elder brother, Duane Washington, went on to play briefly for the New Jersey Nets and Los Angeles Clippers, illustrating the hard work and sacrifice required to reach his goals.
Derek attended Little Rock’s Parkview Arts and Science Magnet High School.
He was a letterman in basketball there.
His leadership talents were obvious to everyone who came into contact with him even as a teenager.
Despite his excellent ability, Derek was not heavily sought by collegiate schools during his junior and senior years.
D-Fish picked the University of Arkansas at Little Rock to be close to his family while honing his skills in preparation for bigger things.
For four years, the player studied communications at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.
Fisher graduated from Arkansas-Little Rock as the school’s all-time leader in points (1,393), assists (472), and steals (472). (189).
Over 112 games, he averaged 12.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game, and he led the team in assists and steals each year.
By the time Derek Fisher graduated from college, he had established himself as one of the best point guards in the country.
He was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in 1996, alongside Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal.
From 2000 to 2002, the three were instrumental in the triple series’ success.
Kobe and Fisher were very close friends who pushed each other to be better athletes.
Derek Fisher immediately established himself as one of the most respected players in NBA history as a result of his hard work and dedication.
Fisher played point guard for the majority of his career, averaging 6 points per game.
Derek Fisher, likewise, made history in 2004.
The Los Angeles Lakers were tied 2-2 with the San Antonio Spurs and needed to win to advance to the NBA playoffs.
They wasted a one-point lead with only 0.4 seconds left in the game.
That’s when the Fisher magic took effect.
Derek grabbed a pass and drove to the basket, scoring for his team and winning the game before the clock ran out.
With only 0.4 seconds to spare, it was a fantastic accomplishment and display of speed and agility.
Los Angeles Lakers reached the NBA Finals.
The Lakers, however, were defeated in the finals by the Detroit Pistons.
Following that, the Lakers’ stars split up.
Derek then joined the Golden State Warriors and spent two seasons with them.
He later became a member of the Utah Jazz.
Marc Gasol was born on January 29, 1985, in Barcelona, Spain.
The footballer now plays in the LEB Oro for Bàsquet Girona.
Derek Fisher as a Trainer
In 2014, Fisher was named head coach of the New York Knicks.
His first season was a disaster, with the Knicks finishing with a franchise-low 17-65 record.
Derek was fired in early 2016 as the team’s record fell to an all-time low.
Fisher has had better success as the head coach of the Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA, which he took over in late 2018.
The team finished 22-12 and advanced to the playoffs in his first season.
In his second, shortened season, the team finished 15-7.
In 2020, Fisher was named general manager of the Sparks.
Derek Fisher is a television analyst
Derek appeared as a guest on television shows during his career.
Throughout the NBA season, Fisher appeared as a commentator on TNT’s Inside the NBA and NBA TV.
However, the athlete did not begin working as a broadcaster professionally until the spring of 2016.
In early 2016, he was fired from his coaching position.
So we may say Derek found a means to go back inside NBA arenas by using a TV table.
At the start of the 2016-17 season, the former player began working as a studio commentator for Spectrum SportsNet’s Lakers coverage.
Following that, he began working for TNT in February, with the inauguration of the network’s “Players Only” schedule.
It’s a Monday game show where the studio and game analysts are all past players.
Derek values the ability to bring a perspective that a pundit who has never played cannot, as well as the opportunity to travel and visit friends.
Derek served as a TV analyst with many of his former colleagues, including Shaquille O’Neal.
The show Dancing with the Stars
Fisher, a five-time NBA champion, also competed for the Mirrorball Trophy on Dancing with the Stars in 2017.
Derek and his partner Sharna Burgess finished eighth out of 13 competitors in their first week, earning 18 points out of a possible 30.
The former Los Angeles Laker made the transition from the hardwood court to the dance floor, but he seemed at home with his ballroom dancing partner.
He flaunted his little body, dribbled a basketball, and wore purple and gold again in his debut performance.
Fisher states that the program helped him “grow as a man” and as a human by giving him the opportunity to be something more than himself. He goes on to state that the encounter changed his life forever.
Sharna dedicated an Instagram post to Derek after his elimination. She stated:
“Our journey was brief, but it was unforgettable.
You already know how much I admire you, and I’m so grateful you were able to have that moment with and for Tatum last night before we left.”
Sharna went on to say how proud she was to be Derek’s coach.

Derek Fisher is the Player’s Union President.
Fisher was an NBPA player representative before joining the union’s executive committee.
He was elected president of the union in 2006.
He supported the referees during the NBA’s 2009 lockout.
Fisher was more involved than his predecessors during the 2011 NBA lockout, sharing leadership with Billy Hunter, the union’s full-time executive director.
Derek was secretly talking with Stern on a deal for the players to accept less money, and Hunter asked Fisher about it.
In a letter to the players, Fisher called the charges about his commitment “absurd” and asked for a retraction for the slanderous and defamatory falsehoods through his attorney.
Similarly, Hunter reported that he and Derek had a terrific friendship and that they never argued.
Hunter persuaded the union’s executive committee to later urge Fisher’s resignation.
Fisher, on the other hand, refused to resign and instead campaigned for an outside investigation of the union.
Hunter’s leadership was slammed by the outcome.
The union voted Hunter out as executive director 5-0 during their annual meeting during the All-Star break in 2013.
Fisher was re-elected president despite not being on an NBA team at the time.
However, he was still eligible due to his time with Dallas earlier in the season.
The presidency of Fisher ended in the summer of 2013.
In May 2013, Hunter filed a lawsuit against Fisher and Jamie Wior, Fisher’s publicist and business partner, seeking compensation and punitive damages.
During the lockout, Fisher reportedly forged a secret deal with NBA owners, according to the lawsuit.
In January 2014, however, the court dismissed all of Hunter’s charges against Wior and Fisher.
Hunter subsequently dropped his appeal in May.

Fisher married Candace in 2005, and the couple has four children: Marshall, Chloe, and twins Tatum and Drew.
The couple divorced in 2016, however. Derek began dating Gloria Govan, the ex-wife of his former teammate Matt Barnes, later that year.
After three years of dating, the pair got engaged in April 2018 and began planning their wedding.
However, due to the coronavirus outbreak, they were forced to postpone their wedding.
Finally, in July 2021, the pair exchanged vows.
Gloria took to Instagram a week after the wedding to share her feelings for Derek. She stated:
“As I begin to descend from cloud nine, I can’t help but smile as I recall our wedding just a week ago.”
Our love is not perfect; it is not a fairy tale or a storybook, and it is not always simple…”
In 2009, Fisher secured a restraining order against a 40-year-old female stalker who had been pestering him since 2001.
She claimed to be married to Fisher, even changing her surname to match his.
The order was extended for three years and expires in May 2012.
Derek was arrested for DUI on June 4, 2017, following an automobile accident in Los Angeles in which his vehicle overturned.
Gloria Govan, his then-girlfriend (now wife), was also in the car. She was not hurt, however.
Derek later pled not guilty in the case.
Fisher’s net worth has been hailed as a basketball gem.

A month later, the house was sold for $2.31 million.
