Derek attended Little Rock’s Parkview Arts and Science Magnet High School.

He was a letterman in basketball there.

His leadership talents were obvious to everyone who came into contact with him even as a teenager.

Despite his excellent ability, Derek was not heavily sought by collegiate schools during his junior and senior years.

Professional Development

By the time Derek Fisher graduated from college, he had established himself as one of the best point guards in the country.

He was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in 1996, alongside Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal.

Derek grabbed a pass and drove to the basket, scoring for his team and winning the game before the clock ran out.

With only 0.4 seconds to spare, it was a fantastic accomplishment and display of speed and agility.

Los Angeles Lakers reached the NBA Finals.

His first season was a disaster, with the Knicks finishing with a franchise-low 17-65 record.

Fisher has had better success as the head coach of the Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA, which he took over in late 2018.

He supported the referees during the NBA’s 2009 lockout.

Fisher was more involved than his predecessors during the 2011 NBA lockout, sharing leadership with Billy Hunter, the union’s full-time executive director.

Derek was secretly talking with Stern on a deal for the players to accept less money, and Hunter asked Fisher about it.

In a letter to the players, Fisher called the charges about his commitment “absurd” and asked for a retraction for the slanderous and defamatory falsehoods through his attorney.

Similarly, Hunter reported that he and Derek had a terrific friendship and that they never argued.

Hunter persuaded the union’s executive committee to later urge Fisher’s resignation.

Fisher, on the other hand, refused to resign and instead campaigned for an outside investigation of the union.

Hunter’s leadership was slammed by the outcome.

The union voted Hunter out as executive director 5-0 during their annual meeting during the All-Star break in 2013.

Fisher was re-elected president despite not being on an NBA team at the time.

However, he was still eligible due to his time with Dallas earlier in the season.

The presidency of Fisher ended in the summer of 2013.

Lawsuit

In May 2013, Hunter filed a lawsuit against Fisher and Jamie Wior, Fisher’s publicist and business partner, seeking compensation and punitive damages.

Hunter subsequently dropped his appeal in May.
