He began playing tennis when he was four years old. David competed in his first tournament when he was eight years old. As a freshman, he won the Minnesota State High School tennis championship in 1984.

David attended the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy for his final two and a half years of high school. He played at Stanford for one year and on the professional tour for 13 years.

David won the US Open junior title in 1987 and was the top-ranked junior player in the country at the time.

In 1988, he was a member of Stanford University’s tennis team that won the NCAA team championship. In exchange, David received the Block S Award as Stanford’s most outstanding freshman athlete.

He turned professional on July 4, 1988. In 1990, David won his first top-level singles title at the United States Clay Court Championships in Kiawah Island, South Carolina.

In the same year, he finished second in the men’s doubles at the US Open (with Paul Annacone).

The following year, he experienced the most significant highlights of his career ( 1991). David won the Grand Slam Cup in Munich after defeating Michael Chang in the final in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2, 6-4.

He reached the Wimbledon singles semifinals after beating Andre Agassi, Jan Gunnarsson, Ivan Lendl, Cédric Pioline, and Petr Korda in the quarterfinals before being knocked out by Boris Becker.

David finished second in men’s doubles at the Australian Open, partnering with former Stanford teammate Patrick McEnroe. David reached his career-high singles ranking of world No. 12 in July 1991.

David won three top-level singles and three doubles titles during his playing career. David represented the United States in the Davis Cup in 1993. (v. Australia, 1993).

David defeated top-ranked players such as Michael Chang, Jim Courier, Stefan Edberg, Ivan Lendl, Jimmy Connors, and Andre Agassi, and reached the semifinals or better in every Grand Slam singles and doubles tournament.

Following a series of injuries, David retired from the professional tour in 2001.

He has participated in some senior tour events since his retirement. In 2004, he won the “Wimbledon Over 35 Doubles” title in 2014. (with T.J. Middleton).

In 2002, he began a new career in radio, writing, and speaking. David is currently the producer and host of The Christian Worldview, a live talk radio show.

The program is broadcast on 250 radio stations in the United States. He also writes a tennis column for the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. David has so far published two books as an author.

Bethany House published one of them in 2005, titled University of Destruction: Your Game Plan for Spiritual Victory on Campus. Tristan Publishing published the other book, My Boy, Ben—A Story of Love, Loss, and Grace, in 2014.
