Career in Football

At the Brazilian Sau Paulo youth academy, David began his football career in its early stages.

He was coached by the Sau Paulo Academy and later, at the age of 14, was let go from the club due to performance difficulties.

For the young athlete, leaving the club was the hardest experience of his life. But he made his Vitoria debut in 2006 and began playing in that position.

Benfica

On January 30, 2007, David made his debut for Benfica, his first European club, taking Ricardo Rocha’s position.

He was loaned out to play as a center midfielder from his previous club Vitoria.

The Brazilian joined the team with a $1.81 million transfer fee and made 10 appearances at the end of the season.

David scored his first goal in the Guadinia Trophy against Sporting CP after signing a five-year contract and appearing in eight games.

The athlete was named the team’s vice-captain after appearing in 49 games overall and scoring three goals in the 2009–2010 campaign.

As Benfica won the competition after five years, David was named Portuguese player of the year in the same year.

Chelsea
