Dan was named second-team All-Big Ten as a sophomore in 1968 after playing a key role in blocking for Ron Johnson.

However, he suffered a knee injury during a game against Ohio State. In 1969, he was the team’s tackle, switching from one side of the line to the other.

At the end of the season, he was named a first-team All-Big Ten Conference football player by the Associated Press (AP) and a second-team All-American by the Central Press.

Dan began his professional football career in 1971 when he was drafted 43rd overall by the St. Louis Cardinals. Dan appeared in 12 games as a rookie, starting six of them.

Dan was named first-team All-NFL by the Pro Football Writers Association in 1975, the Associated Press in 1976, and the Associated Press, Pro Football Writers Association, and Newspaper Enterprise Association in 1977.

Dan officially retired from football in 1983 due to a series of knee injuries.

He appeared on Monday Night Football broadcasts on ABC. Dan first joined the network in April 1987. He appeared on the show alongside Al Michaels and Frank Gifford.

After 12 seasons, he announced his departure in early 1999.
