Craig then worked as a staff writer for the national Desk, where he reported on the Pentagon, national security, and the United States military.

Craig has reported from at least sixty countries during his time at the Washington Post. He has also investigated terrorist networks in North Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and South Asia.

Craig worked as a reporter for The News & Observer in Raleigh, North Carolina, before joining The Washington Post in 1998. He worked as a staff writer for The Anniston Star in Anniston, Alabama, during his journalism career.

Craig has also written for the Post about the Afghanistan Papers, a series of interviews conducted by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction to gather information about the Afghan reconstruction effort.
