Late Night with Conan premiered on September 13, 1993, from Studio 6A at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York City, to unfavorable reviews from contemporary critics.

The reception was not completely unsurprising; he wrote a self-deprecating The New York Times piece titled “O’Brien Flops!” on the day of the show’s start.

The Washington Post’s Tom Shales suggested that “the host resume his initial identity, Conan O’Blivion.” Overall, critics thought he was “too smart, too East Coast, too sophisticated, too young, and even too tall to be successful.”

On February 20, 2009, NBC aired the final episode of Late Night with Conan. This show featured a montage of former Late Night clips, as well as a surprise appearance by retired sidekick Andy Richter.

Will Ferrell, John Mayer, and the White Stripes made appearances as well.

Conan ended the episode by destroying the set with an axe, handing out the set’s pieces to the audience, and thanking a long list of people who assisted him in reaching that point in his career.

Conan’s Late Night clips began to appear on his TBS website and the Team Coco YouTube Channel in 2019.

Conan’s late-night programs combine the “lewd and wacky with more elegant, narrative-driven short films (remotes)”.

With his retirement on May 20, 2015, David Letterman became the longest-serving late-night talk show host in the United States.

Conan’s active streak ended when he retired from late-night television in June 2021, after nearly 28 years as a late-night host.
