He began writing newspaper columns and magazine articles in the 1980s. Colin wrote an oft-quoted essay for McSweeney’s in 1999, claiming to be book critic Michiko Kakutani.

He has also worked as a contributing editor for Men’s Health and Best Life magazines. Colin has also contributed to Verge, Mademoiselle, and Mirabella.

He’s also written for Metropolitan Home, Family Fun, McSweeney’s, Cosmopolitan, and Forbes FYI.

He also writes a weekly column for The Hartford Courant. Colin has been a reporter and columnist for The Courant for over three decades.

He contributes to The New York Times op-ed page on a regular basis, and his columns have appeared in newspapers both in the United States and around the world.

Colin published a serialized novel on the pages of The Hartford Courant in 1994. His play, A Woman of a Certain Age, premiered in May 2003 at the Ivoryton Playhouse in Connecticut.

Furthermore, the musical was created in collaboration with former Courant colleagues Lary Bloom and Steve Metcalf.

His third book, My Father’s Footprints, won the Connecticut Book Award for best biography or memoir in 2004.

In the fall of 2008, he returned to Trinity College in Hartford to resume his teaching duties. Colin’s blog appeared on the Courant’s website until 2018.

Colin began writing a weekly column for Hearst Connecticut newspapers, including the Stamford Advocate, the New Haven Register, and the Connecticut Post, in January 2019.

On WTIC, he hosted a weekday afternoon drive talk show. However, Colin was laid off by the station in December 2008 as part of a cost-cutting measure. He started a weekly afternoon show on WNPR in 2009.

In 2013, he conducted an interview with Stephen King under the auspices of the Mark Twain House. In the 2008-2009 season, Colin and Edward Cumming redesigned the Hartford Symphony Orchestra’s Connections series.

He has performed his own spoken word pieces with the orchestra twice under Carolyn Kuan’s direction. Colin collaborated with director Eric Ort and Carolyn in 2017 to create a series of monologues set to the movements of Franz Liszt’s Faust.

Ward Duffy and Crystal Dickinson were the production’s lead actors. In 2011, he began contributing to Bicycling magazine. Colin wrote a column about taking up the sport while there.
