Education Details

Chris Kalous moved to Fort Collins, Colorado, to study at Colorado State University. He chose the University because it was close to the mountains.

Chris began top roping at Horsetooth Reservoir while in college. He soon learned to lead and place gear in Eldorado Canyon, and climbed Lumpy Ridge.

Chris, on the other hand, quickly became interested in larger goals.

He became obsessed with notions of toughness, willpower, and an unyielding, at-all-costs drive to the summit after immersing himself in climbing literature. He considered these to be the sport’s ideals.

Professional Career

Kalousspent three seasons guiding for Colorado Mountain School after graduating from college. He later moved to Southern California and began climbing big Yosemite aid climbs.

In 1994, Chris’ first solo ascent of El Capitan was the 18-pitch Aquarian Wall (5.7, A3).

He was only 23 years old at the time. On that climb, he was caught in a storm that lasted three days. Chris waited out the storm while others called for help because he had plenty of food and water.

In 1997, at the age of 26, he decided to end the big wall soloing chapter of his climbing career. When he soloed the Gulf Stream, an A4 or A5 route, it was a watershed moment.

He claims that if the grading system is based on the route’s danger, more people should die on A5.
