Brendan Haywood

Who is Brendan Haywood?

Brendan Haywood is a former basketball player and broadcaster. Brendan Haywood played in about 13 NBA seasons between 2001 and 2015. At the conclusion of his playing career, he had amassed nearly 5500 points and 4800 rebounds.

In 2001, Haywood began his NBA career. He entered the league through the Cleveland Cavaliers, but he made his NBA debut with the Washington Wizards.

Early Life, Family, and Education

Brendan Haywood was born on November 27, 1979, in New York City, New York, in the United States.

Aside than that, his father’s identity is unknown.

The mother and son spent a little amount of time in the metropolis of skyscrapers.

They eventually relocated to North Carolina, where his mother was hired as a librarian.

Fortunately, she made enough money to support the lives of two individuals.

Haywood was raised in North Carolina and went to Greensboro’s James B. Dudley High School.

His loving mother Barbara used to place a greater emphasis on his education than other hobbies.

Since Haywood worked as a librarian and was a voracious reader, he frequently received books as gifts.

Haywood therefore had a solid academic record and frequently received As on tests.

Brendan grew taller than most children in his school and neighborhood as he got older, which caught the attention of his school’s basketball coaches.

As a result, he began hoops practice and had great promise.

His mother, however, continually reminded him to treat his academics seriously and would only permit him to play basketball if he had finished his homework.

She once went to his school to ask the coaches not to indulge her child when his grades started to slip.

Regardless, he was a bright student who continued to perform well in subsequent years.

Contrarily, Haywood persisted in his basketball career and joined his high school squad.

Even Barbara used to occasionally bring her son to practices.

The top goal, though, was always education. After completing his high school studies in 1997, Haywood eventually enrolled in the University of North Carolina at Tar Heels.

In 2001, Brendan earned a bachelor’s degree in communications.

Net Worth & Earnings

Brendan Haywood is reportedly valued at around $25 million.

He has been employed in the sports media for around seven years, and as a broadcaster, he makes a respectable living.

But as everyone is aware, he spent many years as a professional basketball player and made a sizable sum of money.

At the start of his NBA career, he inked a $4.8 million, four-year deal with the Washington Wizards.

He received about $978k from the Wizards alone for his rookie campaign.

He remained with them until 2009, playing in seven additional seasons during which time he earned earnings of about $23 million.

Over the following six years, he also played for other NBA teams such as the Dallas Mavericks, Charlotte Hornets, and Cleveland Cavaliers, earning an additional $45 million.

All things considered, Brendan earned almost $69 million during the course of his NBA career.

Additionally, he received additional compensation for endorsing brands from businesses like Panini.

High School & College Basketball Career

One of the more well-known young student-athletes at the James B. Dudley School was Brendan.  He was a good height for a center, and as a result, he was skilled in that position.

For his efforts during his senior year, Haywood won the Gatorade North Carolina Basketball Player of the Year award.

He was also chosen for the 1997 McDonald’s All-American Team.

Haywood joined the university team when Dean Smith, the famed coach of the Tar Heels, was impressed by his play. As a result, he started playing for them in the 1997–88 campaign.

Even though he played in every game during his rookie season, they hardly ever used him. In that season, he could only manage 2.9 points and 2.4 rebounds a game.

But beginning with his sophomore year, under the leadership of new head coach Bill Guthridge, he was named to the starting lineup, and he immediately began to raise his game.

In his final three college seasons, he scored roughly 12.0 points and grabbed 7.0 rebounds per game.

In the 2000 NCAA tournament, he guided the Tar Heels to the Final Four.

Due to his success during his senior year, Brendan was chosen for the Second Team All-Atlantic Coast Conference. In 2001, Sports America also selected him for their Second Team All-America.

Professional Career

Initially showing interest in Haywood, the Cleveland Cavaliers selected him with the 20th overall choice in the first round of the 2001 NBA draft.

However, as soon as the draft season was done, the Cavaliers gave up on him.

Prior to the NBA season, Haywood was dealt twice, but he ultimately settled with the Washington Wizards.

In his first season, he participated in almost 60 matches, and his performance was ordinary.

His ability to rebound and block shots, though, gave the team reason for optimism and ensured that he would play for the Wizards for at least another season.

Throughout his NBA career, Brendan’s scoring skills hardly developed, but he was a constant force on the defensive end of the court.

While still a member of the Wizards and in his heyday, he averaged more than 7.0 rebounds per game.

From 2006 until 2010, he played with the Washington Wizards for nine seasons. He was dealt by the team on February 13 to the Dallas Mavericks.

The Mavericks terminated him after he had played for them for about three seasons, despite the fact that he had signed a six-year contract with the team.

In 2011, Haywood won the NBA title while playing for the Mavericks.

Additionally, he played with the Charlotte Bobcats in 2012, although his first season there was a complete failure.

To make matters worse, a foot ailment forced him to miss the whole 2013–14 campaign.

Even though he continued to play for the Cleveland Cavaliers for one more season, he never truly recovered from the incident. In 2015, he finally decided to end his professional career.

Spouse & Children

Throughout his NBA career, Brendan Haywood gained a large following, and of course, many women approached him with marriage proposals.

But until he met Theresa Tupea, his genuine love, he continued to reject them all.

Although it is unknown with certainty when they first connected, Haywood most likely did so after retiring.

The couple wed in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2018 after a period of dating.

Theresa is a business owner as well as a professional fitness trainer. Gladiator Gear Apparel, her personal line of athletic wear, is situated in North Carolina.

Alani J. Haywood, the couple’s gorgeous newborn daughter, is a blessing.

Her birthday is April 10, 2020. Theresa also has a son from a prior relationship, named Maota.

The Haywood family is currently content at their home in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Brendan, who also resides with them, adores Maota as if he were his own child.

Height, Weight, and Age

Brendan Haywood is 42 years old as of 2022.

Haywood distinguished himself as one of the NBA’s most successful centers thanks to his abilities, respectable height, and commitment to regular training.

He had a high body fat percentage and was quite hefty when he first joined the league.

He was obviously out of shape and weighed about 310 lbs.

He quickly recognized, though, that this was not going to work because it would then be his difficult task to advance his profession.

Following the advice of dieticians, he began to concentrate more on his eating habits and mostly relied on fruits, vegetables, and a proper amount of meat in his diet.

Brendan is about 263 lbs and is 2.13 meters (7 feet) tall.

Although he has been away from the court for a while, he is still in excellent shape.
