Rich Piana: Beloved Bodybuilder and Longtime Admitted Steroid User

Popular Bodybuilder and Admitted Steroid User

Rich Piana rose to prominence in the fitness community as a result of his huge biceps and larger-than-life demeanor. Thanks to the power of social media, the well-known professional bodybuilder was able to leverage his success on stage into even more fame.

Piana’s sincerity was one of the reasons he garnered such a large following.

Rather than skirting the issue of anabolic steroids, the California native publicly addressed his use of performance-enhancing medications during his bodybuilding career.

However, Piana, unfortunately, died a month before his 47th birthday after collapsing during a haircut in his own house.

Rich Piana exploited YouTube to become one of the most well-known fitness personalities

Rich Piana, a native of Glendale, California, began weightlifting at an age when most kids would rather play with action figures and computer games.

He rapidly gained fame as an amateur bodybuilder because he began at the age of 11.

Indeed, at the age of 18, Piana had already won first place in a number of tournaments.

He won the National Physique Committee Mr. Teen California competition in 1989.

A decade later, he won the NPC Mr. California title, launching him into a long career as a pro bodybuilder.

Piana was on the covers of various fitness magazines and appeared superhuman in many of his images.

Ironically, he had a brief cameo as The Incredible Hulk on an episode of Scrubs.

Of course, he spent significantly more time in front of the camera, creating videos for his YouTube channel.

And many of those tapes included Piana freely discussing his use of anabolic steroids and other performance-enhancing substances.

Piana never shied away from discussing the use of anabolic steroids

Rich Piana never tried to hide the fact that anabolic steroids gave his huge muscles a chemical boost.

In fact, in a 2014 video broadcast on his YouTube account, he admitted to using them since the age of 18.

Although Piana mentioned hair loss, adult acne, and undesirable weight gain as possible adverse effects of anabolic steroids, he also stated that he did not abuse them.

He then posted another video two years later in which he advised viewers not to use anabolic steroids at all.

“If you have the option of taking steroids or staying natural, be natural,” Piana said.

“There isn’t any reason to use steroids. You’re only causing harm to your body and yourself.”

His YouTube channel also contains a wide range of non-PED-related content.

Piana constantly promoted his company, Rich Piana: 5 percent Nutrition, gave diet and fitness advice, and gave an inside look into his personal life.

Piana died unexpectedly a year after encouraging viewers to avoid using steroids totally.

The popular bodybuilder died tragically after fainting during a haircut

Rich Piana fainted on August 7, 2017, while obtaining a haircut from his longtime partner and fitness model Chanel Jansen.

She attempted to apprehend the former bodybuilding champion, but his stature and weight were too much for her to handle, according to a police report obtained by TMZ Sports.

On a table, paramedics discovered an unknown white substance and a credit card.

Police allegedly discovered 20 bottles of testosterone in his residence.

Despite Jansen’s assurances that Piana had overcome his opiate addiction, first responders administered two doses of Narcan in an attempt to revive him in the event of an overdose.

Piana, on the other hand, did not regain consciousness.

He was taken to a nearby hospital and placed in a medically induced coma.

The popular bodybuilder passed just two weeks later at the age of 46.

According to an autopsy report obtained by Men’s Health, Piana had “severe” indicators of cardiac disease.

Although the investigation could not make a clear link between his death and his well-documented use of anabolic steroids, insulin, and other medications, it did state that drug involvement “could not be ruled out.”

Jansen spoke with Men’s Health a few months after Piana’s untimely death about the warning signs he displayed in the days preceding up to his abrupt collapse before offering a strong message about the necessity of keeping loved ones safe.

“I hope partners understand that although being supportive is vital, you also need to be hard and harsh,” she said.

“I did my best, but he was a really stubborn individual.” All I have to advise is to understand the warning signals and CPR.”
