Andrew Wiggins

Andrew Wiggins is a professional basketball player. Andrew Wiggins currently plays for the Golden State Warriors in the NBA. In 2014, the charismatic basketball prodigy was drafted first overall in the American basketball league.

Andrew played college basketball for the Kansas Jayhawks prior to his professional career.

Throughout his brief collegiate tenure at Kansas, he had garnered rave reviews for his work.

Childhood, Family, and Education

Andrew Wiggins was born on February 23, 1995, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Mitchell (Father) and Marita Payne Wiggins (Mother) are his parents.

His parents were both professional athletes. Mitchell, Andrew’s father, is a former NBA player who was living in Europe when Andrew was born. In 2003, he ended his professional career.

Marita, his mother, was a track and field athlete who competed for Canada in a number of international events.

Andrew continued to play basketball tournaments after high school and went on to become the NBA’s top prospect.

Mitchell Jr. also played basketball for the Southeastern Fire in college.

Nicolas, his other brother, played collegiate basketball for Wichita University and is now a member of the NBA G League.

Andrew traveled to the United States and enrolled in the Huntington Prep School for high school education after temporarily attending Vaughan Secondary School in Canada.

In 2013, he received his high school diploma from the same institution.

Wiggins continued his education at the University of Kansas in Lawrence.

Wiggins grew up in Thornhill, Ontario, in a large family with five other siblings.

Everyone admired him because he was the youngest.

Mitchell Jr. and Nicholas, his older brothers, had started playing basketball when he was a small child.

They watched their father’s bouts and aspired to be successful in the future.

Wiggins grew up loving sports and began playing with his brothers at an early age.

All of the Wiggins children had had athletic gifts from their parents, and Andrew eventually shown that he was superior to them all.

He started playing organized basketball when he was nine years old and swiftly advanced.

Taking the moniker ‘Mr. Fantastic’

Andrew has been known as “Maple Jordan” for the most of his life. The little ten-year-old, on the other hand, desired to be known as Mr. Fantastic.

In 2005, Wiggins had just seen the film Fantastic Four. And, with the film, he adopted a new title, “Mr. Fantastic,” which he may have found intriguing and image-perfect.

Net Worth

Andrew Wiggins’s net worth is estimated to be approximately $35 million. Others, however, have stated that it is less than the quantity shown above.

Andrew began his professional career in 2014 with the Minnesota Timberwolves. As the top pick in the draft, the team had paid him almost $5.5 million for his rookie season.

Wiggins was a member of the Minnesota Timberwolves until 2019, earning around $44 million in his rookie season before joining the Golden State Warriors.

In 2017, he signed a five-year, $148 million contract with the Timberwolves, but it was voided after the trade. In his first two full seasons with the Warriors, he made a lot of money.

For the 2021-22 season, the Warriors offered him a $31.5 million annual salary. As a result, he is the Golden State Warriors’ third-highest player.

He has already accumulated over $105 million from his NBA career to date.

Even though his primary source of earnings is the league games, Wiggins earns a lot through brand endorsement deals.

He has endorsed the products of various companies such as Adidas, Bio Steel, Fitbit, etc.

Basketball Career

Career in High School

Andrew had honed his basketball abilities even before he joined the high school team. He spent his first two years of high school in Canada, playing for Vaughan Secondary School.

In 2011, he led his team to the Ontario provincial championship as a sophomore.

Despite the fact that he played a key role in the trophy’s victory, many fans attacked him on the court, with some even labeling him “overrated.”

He recognized at that point that no matter how hard you strive, there will always be individuals who attempt to bring you down.

After his sophomore year, he transferred to the Huntington Prep School in America, where he spent his final two years of high school. Wiggins’ ferocious play continued on the next court as well.

He averaged 23.4 points and 11.2 rebounds per game during his final season.

As a result, he was labeled a high-ranking recruit by different sports agencies, and he earned multiple trophies in his senior year, including the Gatorade National Player of the Year.

Career in College

Wiggins chose to play collegiate basketball with the Kansas Jayhawks after graduation and enrolled at the University of Kansas.

He had, however, gotten scholarship offers from prestigious universities such as Kentucky and North Carolina.

While only a freshman for the Jayhawks, he set numerous records and won numerous trophies.

For his great performance in 2014, he was named Big 12 Freshman of the Year.

Andrew opted to forego his last three college seasons and declare for the NBA draft on March 31 after finishing the season with 17.1 points and 5.9 rebounds per game.

That year, he was one of the top ten semifinalists for the Naismith College Player Award.

Professional Career

Wiggins was selected first overall in the 2014 NBA draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

After Anthony Bennett a year earlier, he became the only Canadian to be selected first in the NBA draft with that selection.

However, he was transferred to the Minnesota Timberwolves by the Cavaliers a few months later. With the Timberwolves, he had a fantastic debut season.

In his first NBA season, Andrew appeared in all 82 games and averaged 16.9 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. He was named the best rookie that season, among other accolades.

Similarly, in the 2017-18 season, he had his greatest season in the league, averaging 23.6 points per game. In the same season, he made his only appearance in the NBA playoffs.

He stayed with the Timberwolves for another five seasons, until the mid-season of 2019-20.

Despite his repeated injuries, every time he came onto the court for the club, his performance was always on spot.

On February 6, 2020, the team traded him to the Golden State Warriors. Wiggins had a strong debut season with the Warriors, averaging 19.4 points per game in about 12 games.

In the 2021-22 season, Wiggins is still with the Warriors. In 2022, he was selected for the first time in the NBA All-Star game.

Career Opportunities on the Global Stage

Andrew has participated in multiple international competitions with the Canadian national team in addition to his league career.

In 2010 and 2012, he was a member of the national team that won bronze in the FIBA U17 and U18 World Championships.

Injuries & Covid-19 Vaccination

Unlike many NBA players, Wiggins has been available for his team during the matches as he rarely suffers injuries. He was out of the court in 2018 for a few games due to a sore knee.

Before that, he had missed some matches due to a knee injury back in 2015. So, he has never faced major damage in his career to date.

However, he drew much criticism when he refused to get the Covid vaccine in 2021.

The NBA had instructed everyone to get vaccinated by October 13 that year, but he had remarked he wouldn’t do it.

Thankfully, he backed off and vaccinated himself with a Johnson & Johnson vaccine dosage in October. However, he had requested the NBA to exempt him from vaccination which it denied.

The NBA could have permanently suspended him if he had not followed the protocols. If not, he could have lost an enormous amount from his annual salary.

Wiggins entered the Covid-19 health and safety protocols a couple of months later in December, but he immediately returned to the game in early 2022.

Personal Life

Andrew Wiggins is in a romantic relationship with a beautiful girl named Mychal Johnson.

As per the source, Wiggins met her in 2013, and they have been together for the past nine years.

They were around the same age when they met but used to attend different universities.

Like Wiggins, Johnson was also in her first year of college at that time and played basketball for the University of Notre Dame basketball team.

Even though Mychal was good at the sport, she did not pursue it after college. Instead, she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 2018.

Johnson remained firm in support for the Canadian athlete throughout his journey in the NBA, so she deserves credit for his success.

Even though America is not his own country, she made him feel at home.

They are not married yet but live together happily with two beautiful daughters. Johnson gave birth to their first daughter, Amyah Wiggins, on October 11, 2018.

Similarly, they welcomed their second daughter, Alya Wiggins, in 2020.
