Amanda Lourenco Nunes, full name Amanda Lourenco Nunes, is a Brazilian professional mixed martial artist who has built a name for herself in the martial arts world.  Amanda Nunes is the first woman to be crowned UFC champion in two divisions.

She is also the third fighter in UFC history to hold titles in two weight classes at the same time.

Along with several other belts, Nunes is the first and only fighter in UFC history to defend two crowns at the same time.

Amanda is widely regarded as one of the finest female MMA fighters of all time.

Amanda Nunes, 32, is the reigning Women’s Bantamweight and Featherweight Champion.

As of June 2, 2020, she is ranked first in the UFC women’s pound-for-pound rankings.

She has competed in the UFC championship numerous times and has won the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Championship.

Childhood, Early Life, and Education

Amanda Nunes, alias Lioness, was born in a small hamlet outside of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, on May 30, 1988.

Nunes grew up with her single mother and two older sisters. She was the smallest of three sisters.

Nunes began karate training at the age of four, while other children were busy playing.

She began boxing training when she was sixteen years old.

She competed in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu after being invited to a dojo by her trained sister.

Nunes attended a local high school; however, it is unknown whether she continued her studies after graduating from high school.

A Career in Mixed Martial Arts

Amanda Nunes trained at AMA Fight Club while residing in New Jersey. She later relocated to Miami to train at MMA Masters.

She is now undergoing training at the American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Florida.

After completing the 145-pound weight categories, Nunes plans to compete at 135 pounds in the future.

The current mixed martial artist made her professional debut on March 8, 2008, at Prime MMA Championship 2.

Strikeforce

Nunes had previously won five straight fights, all by knockout, before making her Strikeforce debut on January 7, 2011, at Strikeforce Challengers: Woodley vs. Saffiedine in Nashville, Tennessee.

On September 10, 2011, Nunes faced Alexis Davis in Strikeforce: Barnett vs. Kharitonov.

Nunes was defeated by TKO late in the second round.

Nunes was feeling the effects of tiredness from the first round to the second round.

Davis immediately reversed Nunes while trying a takedown due to tiredness, and Davis got full mount to end Nunes with blows.

FC Invicta

Nunes was set to face Milana Dudieva at Invicta FC 2: Baszler vs. McMann in July 2012.

Dudieva, however, withdrew from the bout owing to illness.

Amanda Nunes was later slated to face Leslie Smith instead.

Smith also withdrew due to an injury, therefore Nunes was forced to face Raquel Pa’aluhi.

In the first round, Nunes won by technical submission with a rear-naked choke act.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC)

Nunes made her UFC debut in August 2013 against Sheila Gaff at UFC 163 in Brazil. She won the bout with a TKO act.

Nunes debuted in the UFC for the second time in November 2013, when she faced Germaine de Randamie at UFC Fight Night 31.

She won the fight through TKO in the first round, as she had done previously.

Nunes was chosen as an injury replacement for Shayna Baszler in the Ultimate Fighter Nations Finale for her third bout and promotion against Sarah Kaufman.

Nunes faced more aggressive opponents as the competition increased. Nunes fought Cat Zingano at UFC 178.

Nunes unleashed blows in the first round and came close to finishing Zingano; however, she lost the following round in the third round before being TKO’d.

Nunes defeated Valentina Shevchenko by unanimous decision at UFC 196 on March 5, 2016.

Champion of Bantamweight

After a three-fight winning streak, the Lioness earned her first title shot in the UFC.

In a battle against Miesha Tate, she won by submission in the first round with knees and punches.

With her triumph, she became the UFC’s first openly gay champion.

Nunes then had to defend her championship against Ronda Rousey in the main event of UFC 207 in late December.

She effortlessly beat the diva by TKO.

Nunes scheduled a rematch with Valentina Shevchenko for her second championship defense at UFC 213.

However, Nunes was hospitalized the morning of the fight due to persistent sinusitis, forcing the match to be canceled.

Despite the time delay, Nunes and Shevchenko fought in September at UFC 215 in Edmonton, Alberta.

Nunes won the closely contested fight by landslide decision, as he did in their previous meeting.

Nunes faced Raquel Pennington at UFC 224, and she stopped the fight with ground and pound at 2:36 of round five.

The fight was the first in UFC history to feature two openly homosexual fighters.

Champion at Featherweight

Nunes challenged Cris Cyborg in the UFC Women’s Featherweight Championship with hard practice and effort.

Nunes won the battle by knocking Cyborg out in the first round after 51 seconds.

With this victory, she became the new UFC Women’s Featherweight Champion.

Likewise, her victory made her the first woman in UFC history to hold championship belts in multiple classes at the same time.

This victory resulted in numerous prizes, including the Performance of the Night title.

Amanda Nunes returns to Bantamweight after honor and triumph to defend her championship against former champion Holly Holm for the fourth time.

Amanda won the fight via knockout in round one, like she had done previously, after down Holm with a head kick followed by punches.

Her victory earned her the prize for Performance of the Night.

Nunes faced Germaine de Randamie at UFC 25, and she won the bout by unanimous decision.

With this victory, Nunes became the woman with the most wins in UFC women’s title fights, with seven.

Nunes plans to defend her featherweight belt against Megan Anderson in December 2020.

However, Nunes withdrew in November due to an unexplained injury, and the fight was rescheduled for 2021.

On March 6, 2021, the two competed in UFC 259. At the end of the first round, Nunes had won the fight through a triangle armbar.
