While their marriage connection has been going on for five years, their professional relationship dates back far more. The married couple has been working together for almost nine years, beginning with the 2013 film Oculus.

The audience can easily detect one constant in most of the works they have done together — Siegel as an actor and Flanagan as a director — which is that they love to make horror movies and terrify the audience.

Despite the fact that the two have terrified the audience,

their children, aged 5 and under, have no idea that “Mommy and Daddy go to work and just murder everyone you love.”

Midnight Mass, a drama-horror-mystery series on Netflix, is the couple’s most recent collaboration.

The duo has followed their pattern in this show as well.

Siegel believes her husband a horror “genius” after years of close exposure to these performing projects.

Here’s a peek at Kate Siegel and her husband Mike Flanagan’s previous collaborations.

‘Oculus’ (2013) (2013)

The 2013 film The American actress met her future filmmaker husband

for the second time at Oculus; the first time was during an unsuccessful audition for Flanagan’s film.

Flanagan directed the rated-R horror-mystery film, in which Siegel portrayed Marisol Chavez.

After the original actress hurt herself, Siegel was chosen to play the part.

“He [Flanagan] was like, ‘It’s a significant part of the movie, and I really want to work with you,'”

she told Entertainment Weekly of her casting for the film.

If you’re willing to come to hang out with us in Alabama for eight weeks,

I’ll keep you in mind for further opportunities.’ “I said, ‘Sure!'” He maintained his commitment.”

The official synopsis for the film is,

“A woman attempts to exonerate her brother, who was convicted of murder,

by establishing that the crime was caused by a supernatural phenomenon.”

‘Hush’ (2016) (2016)

The 2016 film Hush is the second rated-R film in which the husband-wife team has collaborated, following Oculus.

Siegel and Flanagan began dating after they had worked together in Oculus,

and they began to assist each other in various of their professional endeavors, including audition preparation and script reading.

During one of their chats, they came up with the idea for Hush, which became a film.

Maddie, “a deaf and mute writer who retired into the woods to live a solitary life,

must battle for her life in silence when a masked killer comes at her window,” is the protagonist of the film.

Flanagan directed the film, which he also co-wrote with Siegel. Siegel herself performed the primary part of Maddie.

‘Ouija: The Beginning of Evil’ (2016)

Ouija: Origin of Evil is the couple’s first PG-13 film collaboration.

Flanagan directed the film, which was written by Flanagan, Jeff Howard, and Juliet Snowden.

“In 1967 Los Angeles, a widowed mother, and her children add a new act to

enhance their seance fraud company by bringing a demonic presence into their home,

not realizing how hazardous it is,” according to the official synopsis.

Siegel appeared in this film as Jenny Browning, a “skeptical daughter

of Mr. Browning who gets a scare when it’s discovered that she’s chasing her father’s money.”

When asked about her role in the film, the actress stated that

she had never been a blonde before and that this was the first time she had colored her hair for a role.

“I think that movie is a joy,” she continues, “but what I remember most is how much fun I had being a blonde.”

The film ‘Gerald’s Game (2017)

A new film starring Siegel and Flanagan was released around a year after Ouija:

Origin of Evil. Gerald’s Game is a Netflix drama-horror-thriller film.

Flanagan directed the film, which he co-wrote with Jeff Howard and Stephen King (based on the novel by).

Siegel played Sally, the mother of actress Carla Gugino’s character, Jessie, who sees her mother in her hallucinations and flashbacks, in this film.

Siegel was nine months pregnant at the time of filming and was “extremely uncomfortable” owing to nausea.

“I recall asking to Mike early on, ‘Don’t glitz me up,'” she says. I’d like to have frizzy hair.

I want to be radiant and sweaty. I don’t want any of this phony maternal adoration.’

Then I view the movie and say to myself, ‘What was I thinking?!'”

‘Hill House: The Haunting’ (2018)

Flanagan developed the Netflix horror-mystery mini-series The Haunting of Hill House.

Siegel played Theodora Crain in this film, a “daughter of the Crain family with a psychic affinity that awakens by touch.”

The actress was so taken with her role in the play, Theodora, that she named her daughter after her.

The series was an instant success, attracting viewers from all around the world.

This resulted in Flanagan signing a multi-year contract with Netflix.

“Flashing between past and present, a divided family confronts disturbing memories

of their old home and the tragic events that forced them from it,” according to the official synopsis.

‘Bly Manor’s Haunting’ (2020)

Following the great success of The Haunting of Hill House, Flanagan and his co-writer

, Macy, decided to create another anthology series. Netflix distributed the mini-series, titled The Haunting of Bly Manor.

While Flanagan was the show’s originator, he only helmed one episode this time around.

Siegel also made a brief appearance in this one, appearing in only two episodes as Viola.

Siegel felt “sheltered” and loved the activity of working together with other talents because

Flanagan wasn’t significantly involved in this one – as a director – unlike other of his endeavors.

Axelle Carolyn directed her scenes. “When we were going through all of these [events] — ‘She would wake,” Siegel recalled of her time with Carolyn. She was going to walk. She was going to sleep.'”

“[Axelle] would say, ‘In this one, I want it to be like this,’ she continues.”

And she’d bring up an old photograph of Dracula. Having a visual picture

of what she was attempting to achieve was very encouraging to me. It made me want to work with her more.”

Flanagan is also the creator and director of this horror-mystery series.

Siegel played Erin Greene, a woman who lives on Crockett Island, one of the main characters in this film.

“An isolated island community sees miraculous events – and scary omens – after the entrance of a charismatic, mysterious new priest,” according to the synopsis.

Siegel is well-versed with the plot of this program, as her husband has been working on it for years.

Siegel’s character in the film Hush wrote a best-selling novel named Midnight Mass.

And, if you look closely, the same Midnight Mass book appears as an Easter egg in Gerald’s Game.

“It’s come in so many various ways,” Siegel remarked of the easter eggs. It was a film, a novel, and a television series.

So, absolutely, I heard the story before it passed through the [show’s] writers’ room.

“The writers contributed so much to this story,” Siegel says. “They took a great idea and transformed it into a beautiful masterpiece.”
