Rob Kaman’s Childhood

Rob Kaman was born in Amsterdam on June 5, 1960, and was given the nickname Dutch Kickboxer.

He came from a normal family.

His father was a businessman who had a costume shop, while his mother was a housewife.

Unfortunately, Kaman’s parents’ names are still unknown.

He began playing football in the 1970s and aspired to be a famous footballer eventually.

Then, at the age of eleven, Rob Kaman joined the most famous club in the Netherlands, “Ajax Amsterdam.”

Kaman was in Ajax until he was fifteen, then his mind changed and he decided to try something new.

Beginnings of a Career

Kaman debuted in kickboxing in 1978, taking on the renowned Carillon.

His first match, and subsequent loss, pushed him to train more intricately.

That defeat sparked him; after so much practice, his game transformed, and he quickly had multiple knockout victories.

Kaman traveled internationally for the first time in 1980.

He traveled to Thailand for more training and attended the renowned “Sityodtong” camp.

Samart Payakaroon and Kongtoranee Payakaroon, the hero of kickboxing, were also his first opponents.

Dennis, a local champion, was Kaman’s first opponent in Bangkok, Thailand.

But the Dutchman was prepared, and his first match resulted in his first win.

The Dutchman, Rob, knocked out his opponent.

Following that, he had a bout against Lakchart in Bangkok, but Lakchart defeated Rob on points.

However, after returning to Europe, Rob’s Thai expertise helped him win additional battles.

Rob recalled his loss to Lakchart on his first attempt.

So, Kaman gave it his all in 1985 in Amsterdam and 1987 in Japan, defeating Lackchart twice.

Championship

Rob faced Johnny Moncayo, the WKA World Middleweight Kickboxing Champion, in 1983.

Rob gave it his all, and with his final low kick, he defeated Johnny Moncayo.

As a result, Rob Kaman became the first American to win a world championship in kickboxing.

Furthermore, in 1984, Rob was defeated by Thailand’s champion, Payap Premchai.

The match was held at Amsterdam’s Jaap Edenhal, and Kaman was declared the winner by points.

However, three years later, Kaman fought for the Thai championship again, and this time he won via knockout.

Rob won the European Full Contact title in Geneva, Switzerland, the following year.

He was fighting Jean-Marc Tonus of Switzerland at the time.

Rob won the European Mui Thai title by points in 1983, defeating France’s legendary champion Christian Bahfir.

In the middle of one’s career

Rob took a hiatus from his career in 1985 and returned in 1987.

He competed against Ernest Simmon, and he won on points.

Similarly, he reclaimed his kickboxing world title from his countryman Roger Hurd.

Rob returned much stronger, winning match after match.

Rob rose to prominence not just in the Netherlands, but also in Japan.

His fight with Thai Lakchart was the most talked about topic at the moment.

Aside from that, he battled some of Japan’s best fighters, including Hansu Premchai and Don Nakaya.

Rob ultimately defeated KO in Amsterdam, Holland, after being defeated by Changpuek Kiatsongrit in Paris.

While Rob was still the Kick Boxing World Champion, he had to defend his title against puncher Peter Smit in 1990; the battle went all the way to the tenth round, which was horrific.

Unfortunately, despite his blood and sweat, Rob lost the match and his title.

Everyone thought Rob’s defeat would be his final match, but Rob was far from retiring.

In 1991, he returned stronger and fought the new WKA world champion, but Luc Verheye’s lethal fists were too much for Kaman.

Movie

Rob made his film debut in 1989 with the picture Bloodfist.

Don Wilson, the former Full Contact world champion, was the primary character in the film, with Rob playing a supporting role.

Kaman couldn’t devote much time to his career in 1993 because he was working on a film.

He appeared in films such as “Maximum Risk” and “Double Team.”

Later in Life

Jean Yves Theriault, a Canadian fighter who had held the ISKA title since 1980, was supposed to face Rob.

But Rob was no slouch, and he took the title and stopped Yves’ winning streak.

Rob was unbeatable in the middleweight division when he was at the pinnacle of his career.

He held three world titles during his career: WKA Kick Boxing World Champion, ISKA Full Contact World Champion, and Muay Thai World Champion.

Event of the Year

In 1995, the first European $100,000 light-heavyweight competition in Thai boxing was staged in Paris.

This event was conceived by Kazuyoshi Ishii, who was also the creator of the K1 World Grand Prix.

Rob faced Lavelle Robinson in the quarterfinals round of that event.

The fight didn’t go long since Lavelle passed out after five-six low kicks, and Rob won.

Rob’s final encounter was against Jerome Turcan, whom he had previously defeated.

And bashing him up again was nothing new for Rob.

He won $100000 after winning the final.

Retirement

Rob decided to quit his career in 1996 because it felt like he had been struggling for so long and he needed a break.

After retirement, he starred in a film with Jean-Claude Van Dam in 1998, titled “he Legionnaire.”
