Beginnings of a Career
Mary began her training in Imphal with her first coach, K. Kosana Meitei.
When she was 15, she opted to leave her hometown and attend the Sports Academy in Imphal, the state capital.
During an interview with the BBC, her coach Meitei described Kom as an industrious and dedicated girl with great resolve who quickly grasped the fundamentals of boxing.
Mary afterward trained with Manipur State Boxing Coach M. Narjit Singh at Khuman Lampak in Imphal.
Her father, a former wrestler, was unaware of her desire to pursue boxing.
