Who is Jon Gruden?

Jon Gruden is a Sportscaster and an NFL coach. Jon Gruden has been named the new head coach of the Oakland Raiders, bringing back one of the Silver and Black’s most illustrious and successful coaches in franchise history.

Gruden, who was named the Raiders’ head coach for the first time 20 years ago, spent four seasons with the team from 1998 to 2001.

Childhood and Education

Jon Gruden was born on August 17, 1963, in Sandusky, Ohio, to a Slovenian family.

His father, Jim, eventually worked for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a professional regional football scout, quarterbacks coach, and player staff director.

Jon’s father, on the other hand, was a player and coach in the Arena Football League before becoming the head coach of the Washington Redskins.

Gruden grew up as a devout Roman Catholic and a diehard Cleveland Browns supporter.

He was a three-year letterman and backup quarterback for the Flyers at Dayton under coach Mike Kelly.

Professional Life

Gruden has had a long and illustrious career.

Gruden was employed as a graduate assistant coach at the University of Tennessee during the 1985–86 season after graduating from the University of Dayton.

He spent two years as a quarterback coach at Southeast Missouri State after his time with the Volunteers.

Gruden moved to Pacific University as an offensive assistant and tight-end coach in 1989.

Gruden was one of Tennessee’s graduate assistant coaches, and offensive coordinator Walt Harris later hired him at Pacific.

Gruden worked as a special assistant to quarterback coach Mike Holmgren with the San Francisco 49ers in 1990.

Gruden joined the University of Pittsburgh’s big receiver coaching staff in March 1991, under head coach Paul Hackett.

Professional Guidance

In January 1992, Gruden was appointed as the Green Bay Packers’ outstanding offensive assistant/wide receiver coach by Mike Holmgren, his old San Francisco 49ers employer.

The Oakland Raiders are a professional football team based in Oakland, California.

In 1998 and 1999, the Raiders had back-to-back 8–8 seasons under Gruden, leaping out of last place in the AFC West. Oakland, on the other hand, finished 12–4 in 2000, its best season in a decade, and its first division title since 1990.

After three seasons in Green Bay, Jon became the offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles under former Packers assistant coach Ray Rhodes.

Gruden was then unexpectedly hired as the Oakland Raiders’ new head coach for the 1998 season by Al Davis, the team’s owner, and general manager.

The Most Inexperienced Head Coach

Gruden became the youngest head coach to win the Super Bowl at the age of 39.

Gruden’s slogan for the 2002 season was “Pound the Rock,” a reference to his commitment to the running game.

Injuries decimated the team, including several Super Bowl stars such as Greg Spires, Joe Jurevicius, Shelton Quarles, and Brian Kelly, resulting in veteran rivalry.

The Buccaneers, on the other hand, went 7–9 in 2003 and 5–11 in 2004, becoming the first team since Super Bowl XXXVII to have consecutive losing seasons.

On Monday Night Football, the team defeated the Indianapolis Colts, 38–35, in Super Bowl XLIII.

Career After Tempa Bay

Jon coached the offensive line as a volunteer at Carrollwood Day School in Tampa, Florida. Gruden founded the Fired Football Coaches Association in 2010.

The organization’s headquarters were in a rented office in a strip mall in Tampa.

Despite the fact that many coaches came to watch the film and speak with Gruden, including Chip Kelly, Urban Meyer, Jim Haslett, Rick Venturi, Sean McVay, Greg Schiano, and Monte Kiffin, Gruden closed the FFCA when he returned to coaching in 2018.

Gruden signed a contract extension with ESPN in September 2012, extending his contract until 2021.

His final game for ESPN was the AFC Wild Card game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Tennessee Titans in 2017.

Jon opted to return to the coaching ranks for the 2018 NFL season with the Raiders and retired from ESPN after the 2017 season. He is ESPN’s highest-paid person, with an annual salary of $9 million.

Additionally, Gruden is back with the Raiders and he even stated that he had never thought of leaving the Raiders at first.

According to the sources, Gruden signed a ten-year deal with the Raiders which was worth $10 million.

Besides, when Gruden signed a contract with the team for ten years, he also states that he wouldn’t take money if he won’t be able to get things done. However, he didn’t elaborate on what ‘things’ he meant.

Altogether, by the end of his ten-year contract, Gruden will make a total of $100 million.

Hard Knocks

Gruden features in HBO’s Hard Knock show, where he featured in the 2019 editions.

As they premiered the show in August, they portrayed its finale in September.

Initially, he commenced the first episode’s introduction with a speech for the rookies.

Right then, he stated that he was more into nightmares instead of dreams. Additionally, he also shared his collegiate days.

The second episode was followed by a short game description and his real self as a coach.

Likewise, Gruden was alongside Frank Caliendo in the third episode.

As Frank performed Gruden’s impression in the training facility, the episode was all filled with laughter.

Of course, his own impression coming from Frank Caliendo also tore him out a bit as he let out a chuckle.

Moving on to the next episode, Gruden performed and worked as an athlete himself.

He also chased Derek Carr at a full speed. By the end of episode five, the season’s finale, Gruden was getting emotional.

In the meantime, Gruden also commented about Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith and showed a great deal of athleticism.
