Early Career

Kirk attended the same school where his father was an athletic director. Being the coach’s son was convenient, albeit occasionally difficult.

During his final four years, West High won 82 games and lost only nine. He assisted his school in capturing the Iowa State Championship during his senior year.

When he graduated from West High, he had the most points, steals, and assists ever.

The next challenge was deciding which college would best help him develop his skills.

Originally planning to attend Iowa State, Kirk ultimately decided to enroll at the University of Kansas for unknown reasons.

Kirk played 34 games while a rookie for the Kansas Jayhawks, averaging 5.5 points per contest. Following that, the player received the Clyde Lovellette Most Improved Player Award.

Professional Career

After being selected by the Chicago Bulls with the seventh overall choice in the 2003 NBA Draft, he started his professional career in 2003.

He had a strong start to his professional career despite having a severe viral infection right before his debut season.

As the Bulls’ starting point guard in 2004, he was chosen to the NBA’s all-rookie first team. In the end, Kirk was named the Bulls’ MVP for the 2003–04 campaign.

In July 2010, Kirk was transferred to the Washington Wizards.
